I took a night train there from Rome and a day train back - there is frequent service - ES (Eurostar Italia trains) do Rome-Bari in just under five hours. From Naples i think you'd rail to Foggia to connect to Bari-Rome ES trains - the route that goes south of Naples and then east to Bari is longer and has slower trains.

www.trenitalia.com for schedules, pricing and, in theory, booking your own tickets.

Hi LM - From Naples it's normally quicker by bus (- 3hrs15') than by train.

Bus Deps:
07.10 and 09.20 Mon-Fri
07.10 Sat
(No service Sun)

The bus leaves from Porto Immacolatella.

Here's the link:

Hope this helps ...

Trains across this part of Italy are infrequent. There are a few Eurostar trains from Roma to Bari. From Napoli, you change at Caserta.
There are more frequent buses, every hour from outside Napoli Centrale station to Foggia, taking about two to two and a half hours. Tickets are bought on the bus and cost about 10 euros.
From Foggia, there are trains to Bari.

May I tag my own few questions to this thread. We're arriving as ferry foot passengers from Corfu, probably early in the morning, and would like to travel on to Naples in mid-week. The satellite views (Google or Michelin) shows a long dock reaching into the water.

- to get from the ferry to the bus or train station, it looks like 1 km walk through old town

- am I reading the bus or train schedules correctly that I have no connection until late afternoon, with arrival in the evening?

- if a handicapped friend in a car were to meet us at the boat, have you travelers seen a parking spot on the dock that we can agree as meeting point?

Take a train from Bari to Foggia. Outside Foggia station (on the left) is a bus stop with hourly buses to Napoli. If you arrive in Bari in the morning, you should get to Napoli in time for lunch.
There are two ferry terminals in Bari. The old Stazione Marittima serves ferries to Croatia, Montenegro and Albania. A new glass-fronted building serves ferries from Greece and cruise ships. From either, it's a short taxi ride or a longish walk to Bari Centrale station.

GeoffHammer, thanks for the alternate suggestion. It sure helps to consult with somebody having been on location.

Interesting: one guide recommends visiting the citta vecchia; another warns against tourists heading with luggage on foot to the rail station.

Should we be picked up by the handicapped driver, it would be useful to agree on meeting near the arriving ferry, at some landmark with parking.

I've never had any problems in Bari though the city does have a reputation for petty crime. It's too far to walk with luggage from the port to the station. There are buses: route 20/ (www.amtabservizio.it) goes from Terminal Crociere (the cruise terminal used by Greek ferries) to Piazza Moro (next to Bari Centrale station). As with other city buses in Italy, you need to buy a ticket before boarding.
There is a map of the port of Bari on www.porto.bari.it. The Greek ferries use the cruise terminal which is further from the city centre than the Stazione Marittima used by ferries to Albania, Montnegro and Croatia.

I was able to get a very reasonable flight on Air One from Bari to Rome. I would recommend the plane if already in or near the airport as opposed to city center (I actually landed in Rome and had an open jaw Rome Bari Brindisi Rome).
