Barging In France

We want to do a barge trip in France on a really nice barge but don't know what route would be the most charming. Any recommendations from your own trips on specific barges, routes or companies?

We did a one week trip through the Loire Valley this past Sept. We booked through A&K, but the owner/operator turned out to be Continenatal Waterways. The trip was really great, however we were somewhat surprised at how flat the land was. We chose a tour that was on the canal system versus the larger river system which allowed us to get off the barge at the locks and walk or bike to the next lock. Be prepared for miniscule sized cabins.

When we planned our barge trip, I did a lot of checking and found that the consensus was that the Nivernais Canal in Burgundy was the prettiest. When we finally went, our barge captain thought that the Canal du Midi was also among the loveliest.

Some suggestions: as much fun as barging is, and cycling along the paths and through the neighboring villages, the whole thing can get a bit boring in a week or so. So pick a company that has an accompanying van that will take you to sights not available by cycle (and which they would know about but you wouldn't. Also find a company that seems to offer good cuisine; that can make or break a trip. Don't expect large cabins - they don't seem to exist. By all means, have airconditioning; France can get very hot in the summer and a barge would be awful without. Having said all that, we picked La Liberte with French Country Waterways (Duxbury MA: phone 800 222 1236 and had the most lovely sybaritic vacation we've ever had. More fine food, wine, and cheese than we have in a year - and we eat out a lot. Capped by one dinner on shore at a 3-star restaurant. Expensive, but worth every penny! Let me know if you have any questions.
