Barcelona vs. Sevilla???

I have my two week's vacation at the end of April and plan on stopping in Spain on my way to Greece. I have never been anywhere in Spain before and can't decide if I'd rather spend my 3 days in Sevilla or Barcelona. I'm sure I'll love either city, but I'd like to hear some opinions on which has better cathedrals, culture/atmosphere, transportation system, etc... the only thing pushing me towards Barcelona so far is that I've been finding less expensive flights there.

I know 3 days isn't much, but it's all I can spare. I'm a flight attendant, so I'm a pro at seeing all I want to see with limited time!!!

I've been to both and would vote for Barcelona. It's substantially larger with much more to do.

Overall, I suspect you might fid more things of varied interest to see and do in Barcelona.

BUT, the cathedral in Seville is the largest (depending on how it is measured) of its kind anywhere and the altar screen which took one craftsman an entire lifetime to complete is impressive in and of itself. And then there is the Alcazar...

The Metro in Seville is being worked on so there have been reports of "disruptive" street construction in some areas.

If you enjoy what some would call "Spanish colonial" architecture prototypes then seville would be the city to be in.

OTOH if you are interested in Gaudi, including the one-of-a-kind Sagrada Familia as well as a more "traditional" Gothic cathedral, avery varied street scene, other museums devoted to Miro and Picasso, as well as rather interesting nightlife you might prefer Barcelona.

I loved both cities but I also would vote for Barcelona. It is a bigger city with much more to do and see.

Both are great cities but very different, it depends on what you are looking for.
Barcelona is a more cosmopolitan city but Sevilla has magic in the air. They are totally different.
I suposse is cheaper a flight to Barcelona than Sevilla but the city itself (Barcelona) is more expensive than Sevilla to go out, have lunch......
I know Sevilla and it is beautiful, more classic, the architecture, the monuments, Plaza de España and La Giralda are beautiful and you can have tapas everywhere, more "typical Spanish" party.
Anyone you choose you will like.Regards.

It also depends on how you would like to know the city, you have 3 days it is quite time but Barcelona is much bigger than Sevilla.
In 3 days you can know well Barcelona but better Sevilla, the distances are shorter and maybe apart from sightseeing you will have more time to relax in Sevilla.of course it is only my opinion.

another vote for Barcelona......just for the variety it offers. the Gaudi buildings are amazing....like something from a Dr Suess book.....if you go, don't miss his Park Guell.

My vote is for Seville. The small, narrow passageways that are streets are fascinating as are the hidden courtyards and large homes. The plazas are intriguing, and the evening tapas scene is a joy in itself. We loved Seville and would return in a moment.

Barcelona to us was, in many ways, just another large city. Yes, the Gaudi architecture is unique, but there didn't seem to be the magic that Seville has.

One more vote for Sevilla.

I went to Barcelona last year and I liked it, especially the Park Guel and Gaudi's buildings. Food was good. However, it is a very cosmopolitan city. Not much "charm" if you are looking for that. I'm going to Seville this April and I've heard great things about it too.

Another vote for Barcelona...

"Barcelona is a more cosmopolitan city but Sevilla has magic in the air."

Well put.

Maybe toss a coin. As you said, " I'm sure I'll love either city."

Barcelona, Spain's 'window' on Europe, is nice for a 3-day visit (if it's your Port of entry). Sevilla has its colorful Feria de abril (22-28 Apr.).

Why not Madrid?? Madrid has many more top-rated museums than Barcelona or Sevilla: there's Toledo & Segovia for daytrips; and Madrid's nightlife is a match for Barcelona's

cristine27 Jan 27th, 2007 08:15 AM

Barcelona has a direct flight to Athens with Iberia. From sevilla you have to go through Madrid.

I've been to both and strongly vote for Barcelona. Sevilla is great but Barcelona has so much life to it and things to do. Among the dozens of cathedrals I've visited, Sevilla's doesn't rank high as it is more cavernous than anything else. In fact, I prefer La Seu in Barcelona. On the other hand, the Giralda in Seville is magnificent. Still, Sevilla cannot compare to the Bario Gotic, La Rambla, Gaudi's architectural legacy, and much more.

As much as I liked Seville, if you only are visiting one city in Spain I'd go with Barcelona as the better of the two. It's a bigger city, think NYC or Paris.

Though if I had my pick, Madrid would be my top choice for a big city that feels quintessentially Spanish!:)
