Barcelona to Rome then around Umbria and Tuscany

Hello! I've got 12 days including travel days to tour Barcelona then on to Rome and around Umbria. I'm doing this with my fiance and our 13yr old son. Trying to keep this as cheap as possible. Really only can spend $3,500.00 for all days not including airfare there and back.
Would love any suggestions. We are active and love to hike and explore. I am a chef and am going to be on the prowl for good food. Thank you!!

If you are limited in both time and $$$ why are you going so far. From Barcelona, the only good way to travel to Rome or Florence is by plane--look at Vueling who bases in Barcelona.

With 12 days, I would stick to Italy.

A few thoughts:

I actually think you are trying to pack too much in and would skip Barcelona. The day you arrive and leave will be eaten up with getting to and from the airports/hotels plus jetlag (?). You will spend at least 1/2 day getting to Rome and to the hotel. For Umbria you will likely want a car, so if you count the time picking that up then driving you have eaten up 1/2 a day.

If you decide to keep Barcelona book your flight into Barcelona and out of Rome to avoid wasting time and money on backtracking.

Your budget is quite low, especially if you want a car. Its only about $300 a day for 3 people - you will need to book triple hotel rooms, eat, pay for sites, transit etc...I think you will need to increase the budget.

I would stick to Italy for this trip and split the time between Rome and Umbria.

12 days isn't enough for Rome AND Umbria AND Tuscany. But why do you want to fly via BCN; is that cheaper than direct flights?

Flying in to Barcelona to meet my fiance who will be working there for the summer. Then, I wanted to show him and my son my favorite country in Europe. I'm thinking now, as was suggested, that it would be best to fly from Barcelona to Rome and then out of Rome for the return trip. Grab a car in Rome, travel to Orvieto, stay there as a home base and do small side trips around Umbria. Maybe, an overnight in Florence. Thanks for the suggestions. Adding to the budget.

You could also take the overnight ferry from Barcelona, but flying would probably be cheaper. Livorno is the port of Florence. Civitavecchia for Rome.
