Barcelona to Mallorca - need advise

My husband and I will be going to Barcelona in October and would like to spend 3-4 days on Mallorca. My plan was to hop on a plane as soon as we arrive to Barcelona from NYC, without leaving the airport, making Mallorca our first leg of the trip.

My questions to the pros :)

I see reasonable round trip air fare for around 30 British pounds. Is it important to buy those tickets in advance to ensure the price?

Is it possible to get similar prices on the spot at the airport? I am hesitant to buy those tickets in advance, just in case our flight is delayed or something.

Any suggestions for sites where I can find cheap airfare to Mallorca?

Any other suggestions for this kind of trip from Barcelona?

Thank you very much in advance for your input!

30 GBP (or the equivalent in Euros) for a r/t fare is not only reasonable, it's cheap. You should buy now.
Check airline's website for extra costs for luggage or other "hidden" fees, though. And check their luggage allowance for both, checked and carry-on. It can be substantially lower than for your intercontinental flight.
And allow a good amount of time for the transfer between flights.

No, you cannot get that kind of fare at the airport. Low-cost airlines may have a "sale" now and then, but given the already low fare you quoted, I'd not bet on getting it much cheaper. For same or next day travel you usually pay a fortune.

For an overview on possible lo-co flights between Barcelona and Palma, check whichbudget.com

Warning: Double-check from which airport the low cost carriers depart. Many advertise "Barcelona" but not mean BCN (where your flight from NYC will land) but add in fine print either Girona or Reus, both 100-140kms away from Barcelona!

I support the view of not cheap flights at the airport.
Why dont you take the day ferry from 1pm to 8pm Barcelona to Mallorca. it wont be cheaper but you will avoid airports.

Ryanair offer this route and yes if you book early the flight will be very cheap. The flight is usually 25 minutes and very easy going. Anyone know how Ryanair define their BCN - 3 years ago it was Barcelona is it now Perpignon?

Where are you staying on Mallorca?

Two Mallorca posts on one day - this must be a record. I thought the yanks didn't get past Amalfi and Oia!!!

markrosy - no place to stay in mallorca yet. any suggestions?
First of all, flying out of NYC doesn't make me a "yank"... second, I wouldn't generalize :)

What are you looking for?

Mallorca is an incredible place and passed over by most non-European travellers. It has some stunning coastal landscapes and great cultural attractions, architecture and eating.

You need to be very careful when planning as each area excels at its choosen level. There are some of the best places in Europe to experience contemporary classical music but there are also some of the best resorts around to drink until 9am and then go for a burger!

October is a good time to visit as the summer masses have gone back to school. September has better weather as the rain usually increases later in the year. You still should have warm days and a sea warm enough to accommodate swimming.

what's wrong with "generalize"? i am a citizen of the world, born in the old world, living in the "new"

we are looking for a quiet B&B farm stay, lots of good food, wine, local charm, not "doing" much - just experiencing.

does anyone know anything about this place:
