Barcelona to Madrid

Hi Everyone -

What do you think is the best way to get from Barcelona to Madrid? We were thinking of taking the train, but am wondering what your opinion is. Thanks in advance. I appreciate your help.

I never understand the adjective "best" for some transportation questions like this. I think I would investigate flying, but others would insist that this is a good overnight train route.

Seems like there is plenty of interest to make it a one or two stop drive; I enjoyed driving in Spain, and did not really feel that Barcelona, Sevilla or Granada were intimidating (but I have never been to Madrid).

You might want to ask this same question in www.madridman.com also - - a very good forum there. I'm a little bit surprised that this question has gone 24 hours without a reply.

Best wishes,

Rex
[email protected]
You're welcome. Inserting the name Ben Haines here so that he might catch this one (he generally searches on his own name). He just posted info on overnight train service from Barcelona to Sevilla on this thread - - http://www.fodors.com/forums/threadselect.jsp?fid=2&tid=34407926

You might want to place a request "there" for him to take a look at this question "here".
Bpesta,
Having done the trip both ways several times, via train and and plane, I much prefer the air shuttle. The train is a rather long (7 hrs.) and quite boring ride, while the air shuttle is quite easy and a time saver, whether it be via Iberia or Spanair or AirEuropa, its low cost competitors. I would heck the fares of all 3 airlines.

I am afraid I have little to add. I prefer trains, and by rail this jounrney is best made in a sleeper, as the scenery is nothing special. People who do not sleep on trains might take a plane, which I think pointless otherwise, and time-consuming. To visit Sant Vicente de Caldera, Tarragona, Caspe, Reus, Lieda, Zaragoza, Calatayud, Siguenza, or Guadalajara on the way you would take day trains: I do not know whether those places are worth visits. To visit villages on the way you would hire car.

Please write if I can help further. Welcome to Europe

[email protected]
Thanks to all for your help. I checked with Iberia and the fares are great - I think we'll fly.
