Barcelona to Lascaux caves by train
 

Any suggestions on how to travel from Barcelona to the Lascaux caves by train?
If the train ends short of the caves, what other transportation is available?
Any transportation available to travel between the various caves sites?
Can we visit the caves and return to Barcelona in one day? Thanks. Roche

Barcelona to Lascaux II in a day, by train? No. Impossible. You can't even get near the caves by train, and you're talking about multiple train rides to get even close, and many, many hours.

Absolutely impossible.

Can you visit the caves and return to Barcelona in one day? Sorry, but this reminds me of people who want to have lunch in Vancouver and dinner in Toronto. Not possible.

Getting to the Perigord from Barcelona is, as St Cirq says, not easy by train, and the train doesn't go anywhere near the caves. They are in rural France, after all.

There is NO transportation available between cave sites, other than car (or bicycle or walking, depending on how long you want to spend in the area.)

So if you want to see Lascaux, which is only one cave site, and the others in the area, such as Font de Gaume, Pech Merle, etc., you really need to have a car and take some time to get here.Barcelona to Sarlat by autoroute is about 5-6 hours(without stops) Give yourself some time to see the area as well as the caves before going back.

You can fly Iberia from Barcelona to Bordeaux through Madrid for a mere $856. And then it is about a two hour drive to some of the caves.

As others have stated it is impossible, so I recommend a glass of cava instead.

You may be able to visit a similar display in Madrid as there are copies of other famous caves such as Altamira in the National Archaeological Museum of Spain (Madrid), in the Deutsches Museum in Munich (completed 1964), and in Japan (completed 1993).

Lascaux has been closed since 1959, KERRY. The replica, Lascaux II, has been the only option since then. But it's still amazing, especially since the tour not only explains the original cave itself but the remarkable way they replicated it.

There are plenty of original chromatic caves still open to the public in the area, including Font-de-Gaume and Les Combarelles. None of them is do-able as a day trip from Spain, however.

We were very fotunate to visit Altamira before it was closed to general visitors. But the reproductions at Lascaux II are extraordianry in terms of detail and craft.

Besides being an impossible day trip, there are some caves that limited tours to perserve the drawings which are taken early in the day.
