Barcelona-- safe?

hi,

i am going to travel alone to barcelona in january. I heard that it's not a very safe city at night. Where is the best (i.e. safest) area to stay in Barcelona? How many days do I need to see the whole city?

thanks
sara barcelona is as safe as any european city. just observe the usual precautions. one area is bad. of las ramblas near chinatown is the red light district-stay out of there day or nite. dont know your travel habits but generally 4-5 days is adequate to seee city. h ave fun

Safest is outside the centre - use the underground, which is good.
Barcelona is very bad for pickpockets, also some muggers. There have been reports on this forum of tourists being clubbed down at the door of their hotels, then finding the police aren't interested.
Most of the crime is non-violent, but if you stand near the ramblas you can watch the theives target tourists.I have watched people being robbed, its not pleasant even when no violence is involved.
No way is it the average european city in this respect!

Thanks for your replies!
So anyone has any recommendation of a good budget hotel in Barcelona?
I was mugged by a gang just off the Ramblas some years ago - but I've been back loads of times since and it's like any other city - perfectly safe if you are sensible. If you are on your own, avoid the Ramblas area after midnight. Have fun - it is a great city!

I totally agree with Fred and James.

Sara:
My husband and I just got back from Spain. Based on the information I collected from books and the Internet, the impression we got was that Madrid was a "danger zone" and Barcelona was Spain's "crown jewel." I can't even begin to tell you how inaccurate that perception is. Madrid was beautiful, clean, the people were friendly. We did not find Barcelona to be a friendly city. Do not stay on the Ramblas or in the Barrio Gothic. Stay near the University. There is a lot to see in Barcelona -- Gaudi, Miro, Picasso. However, if you haven't finalized your trip plans, I would highly recommend a visit to Seville. It was the most beautiful city we visited in Spain.
Have a wonderful time.

I didn't think the Ramblas area was that bad. It's always so crowded and there's at least a little safety in numbers. Nex time I would probably stay in the area north of Plaza Catalunya(?). I wouldn't stay in the Barrio Gothic. It's a cool area to wander around but I wouldn't do it alone at night.
