Barcelona in December
We are going to Barcelona in mid to late December to visit our son who will be finishing a semester of study there and hoping to do some travelling around Spain and/or Europe with him. Our biggest concern is the weather and where to go. We don't mind the temps. in Barcelona for that time of year but then were thinking of where else to go. We love walking around cities and don't mind 50- 60 degree weather for that-- but we also would love to hike/walk in the countryside. I thought of Majorca, possibly even going further across the Mediterranean to Sicily but perhaps neither of these are worth it in the winter season?? what about the South of France?? All suggestions welcome! Thank you, JEC

We spent three weeks in Catalunya, with one week in Barcelona, this past January. The weather was unusually dry, raining briefly on only one day towards the end of the month. It was cool in the evenings, but the days were beautiful, especially in the Cerdanya and the Pyrenees. The Costa Brava was spectacular in early January. Take a look at the write-up in March Newsletter from Iberian Traveler (http://iberiantraveler/newsletter_03-07.pdf) for a little more information.

Thank you-- those little medieval towns sound really interesting! Would we have to rent a car to get there or could we take a train or bus?

On the other hand I have had flights delayed by snow in Barcelona at the end of November .....
You could consider the Canary Island of La Palma for wonderful walking and countryside, plus good daytime temperatures. Stay on the west side of the island for the best weather.

You'll need a car in order to visit many of the medieval villages in the area as the train only heads up through Girona on the way to France. A bus may be possible, but usually impractical for most of the smaller villages.
