Barcelona: good areas to rent apartment for one week vacation?

My friend and I are going to Barcelona for one week and would like to rent an apartment while visiting. However, we are unsure of what areas are better/safer than others. Any ideas would be welcome. We would like to book an apt as soon as possible.

El Born is hip, full of bars and trendy stores
Eixample is elegant, classy and less crowded .

Eixample. Unless you'r under 30 and want to be literally around the corner from bars etc. Most everything is within easy walking distance or a metro ride away. Eixample is close enough without being in the center of everything.
