Margot, I have just had a quick look for carhire websites (from here in Spain) and this one looks good. http://www.webcarhire.com/default.aspx
Prices start from 35€ per day for four day hire from BCN. I'm sorry I am rushing and didn't have time to check the 'one'way' quotes, but they give quotes for all(?) major European hire companies. Hope it helps.

Your rental is expensive because you're renting an automatic. I also assume you are NOT buying the unnessary CDW insurance.
If you pick up the car in Barcelona at 4:00pm (so you'll be ready to go when your hubby gets finished with the conference), then you would have to return the car to the airport by 4:00PM on Sunday to save a day.
But then you would have to take a taxi to the hotel, taxi to the restaurant, back from the restaurant, to the airport. Add those costs together (don't know the cost - guesstimate at $15 per trip = $60) The hotel has a restaurant open on Sunday, but it's a "basic" one.
Check the rate for 1 less day of rental. Many times rentals of less than 1 week are not much different for 3 days or 4 days.

alijay - I checked out that website, but I can't seem to find a way to check rates for a pick up in Barcelona and drop off in France. Any ideas on how I can access that?
Stu - unfortunately, I never learned how to drive a stick, and my husband hasn't done so in over 30 years, so we're stuck with the automatic. The rate for a 3 day vs. 4 day was $100 less. And these quotes are without CDW. I thought I had read that the hotel has a shuttle that runs to and from the airport - do you remember this from your travels there?

Yes - it could have a shuttle. We drove, since we had to get to the airport at about 5am & I assumed no shuttle would be running then.
Saving $70 (100 for car - 30 for taxi to the restaurant & back) would be a good idea. Hopefully the taxi will know how to get to the restaurant - which is quite well known & somewhat large. Driving there on your own might be a little frustrating for you. When we were there last Sept, there was a lot of airport construction - it seems there's always construction at any airport.

Margot,
I looked round the site and think you need to email a price request to this address. <[email protected]>
I can't do it as it is Outlook Express which I don't use and don't want to set up on my pc. (And anyway, I wouldn't know how to do it!)

Margot- apologies if you thought I was being harsh - I was just a bit confused at why you were making it all so complicated. Having been away for a few days [and suffered total laptop wipeout due to lightening strike] I've been reading the rest of the thread, and I'm still confused- so i reckon it's me not you.
we are hoping to go to Foix and Llo in September, so I'll let you know how we get on - computer issues allowing of course.
Happy planning!
