Barcelona: Best and safe area to stay in? Best hotel on a serious budget?

Hi all,
I am looking for the best hotel deal I can find for 6 nights in Barcelona on a serious budget. Would like $100usd or less a night. I've never been to Spain so I am a bit lost! I have read that the Gothic area is nice? Any suggestions are welcomed! Thank you in advance.

Do you have to stay in a hotel?

I'm staying with a friend in Barcelona for 6 nights in October, and we've booked this apartment for 80 euros a night, with a discount - 6 nights for the price of 5! So that's just 400 euros for 6 nights, plus the cleaning fee of 60 euros.

It's just along from the Palau de la Musica Catalana, and maybe 5 minutes walk from Placa Catalunya so well located in the Gotic quarter.

The owner takes PayPal for the deposit and final payment except for the cleaning fee which is cash on arrival.

Another apartment I've stayed at in the past is perhaps slightly better located, but is more expensive (though still budget) at 100 euros a night.

I love the idea of an apartment and have been searching for them as well as B&Bs. I just am having a difficult time telling where would be the ideal area to stay....
In the meantime, I will check out the links you sent, thank you!

When we last went to Barcelona we stayed in an apartment and I'd definately never stay in a hotel again. For me, for a first time visit, best area would be to the right of the Ramblas.

It would seem like the Eixamle area is the best for first time visitors. Close to sights, yet a little quieter than Ramblas. We've rented a room in a b&b in Eixample for 5 nights in early June, but an apartment is also a good option.

Thank you everyone! After searching the threads, we decided to book an apartment through Habitat Apartments in Born. We got a great deal.
I thank you all again for your thoughtful suggestions, much appreciated!

Through the threads we decided on the Pricesa right in Born, I think it will be a great home base.
