Well, the two biggest/highest quality wine regions are Ribera del Duero and Rioja. Both are out of the way if you are going from Barcelona to Seville. You could hit Priorat, but I don't think the wines there are good enough to warrant the trip.

I would probably just do day trips from Seville to Jerez (Sherry country).

"but I don't think the wines there are good enough to warrant the trip" Really? We rather enjoy them from time to time. And don't forget about the Peñedes just outside of Barcelona, considered Catalonia's premiere wine region.

Agree on Penedes, which has the added benefit of being the home of cava, Spanish champagne. Friends enjoyed a tour of the Freixenet winery.

Barcelona has Torres nearby as well as a whole viallge of Cava at and nearby Freixenet. Seriously good tasting for two days. The Torres even has a smell tunnel. Have fun

Seville has a whole load of areas around it but nothing much right there. Montilla, Sherry and the Condado are all close. Of these the Montilla is the most special and unusual though the easiet will be to go to Jerez and I suggest focus on the Manzanilla.

Within Seville there are locally made wines (not DOC) and mainly light whites out of the basic sherry white grapes though I'm aware a few modenr producers have opened up

hi doug,

how are you planning to get from Barcelona to Seville - and back? fly, train, drive? both the latter will take you most of a day, each way.

you would be better flying into Barcelona and out of Seville/Malaga.

how long do you ahve for this trip?

PS - here's the link to the spanish rail co:

http://www.renfe.es/horarios/index.html

3 trains daily between Barcelona and Seville - the cheap one that takes all day, the expensive one that takes 5 hours, and the overnight one - that might be a good idea!
