Bantry house or Muckross house

One can not really compare the two estates because they are so different We stayed in Bantry one night and visited the Bantry house and gardens. This house is still being restored as it was empty for long time. The Muckross house is on a different level. It has a beautiful house (we did not tour the interior) and an amazing garden. If I only had time for one it would be the Muckross house. There is no fee to walk the grounds for Muckross and there is for Bantry.

Tidy- They are both a pleasant way to spend some time.
At Muckross, the house feels grander. Bantry, you get a feek of the family that lived there.
Muckross has an adjacent farm village w/ 3 farm homes, to show how various sized farms went about daily life. We enjoyed talking to the demonstrators.
I'd also take into account where you are coming in from. Check out whichever fits into your route best. If you do hit Bantry House, you could combine it with a visit to Garnish Island from Glengarriff. Plenty to do in that area. Check out http://www.theewe.com/ if you get bored of castles and formal gardens and need a break. It's a sculpture garden with a bizarre sense of humor. Highly recommended.

Just got back from Ireland and visited both. In fact, we stayed at the Bantry House (6 rooms are available) and did the self guided house tour, which was included in the room rate. Beautiful home. The gardens are impressive, albeit, rather modest in scope/size. The views from the property are outstanding. If you take a lot of pics, you can probably do the garden in 30-45 minutes.
Muckross is in a different league. The house tour was interesting, especially having watched Downton Abbey which turns out to be pretty historically accurate. The gardens are of a considerably larger scale. Plus Ross Castle is nearby, if that is of any interest to you.
