Bamberg or Nurnberg
 

We are looking at spending 4 nights in this area exploring these towns as well as Wurzburg. Is it better to stay in Bamberg or Nurnberg?
Apart from the old town, is there anything else to do/see in Bamberg? We will be travelling by train on our adventure. Thanks for any ideas.

Bamberg is world heritage site so the "old town" is pretty good

Bamberg is a UNESCO World Heritage town with more than 2,400 listed buildings. It extends across seven hills, each topped with a church. It’s referred to as Franconian Rome; it was unscathed by WWII and remarkably well-preserved. It also has nine breweries and is known for it's Rauchbier (smoked beer)..definitely an acquired taste.

You might enjoy Altenburg Castle in addition to just wandering - Bamberg is a treasure, the architecture incredible, the winding streets fascinating.

I've spent several nights on more than one occasion in both Bamberg and Nurnberg and found more than enough to do in both.

Nurneberg is home to the Documentation Center Nazi Party Rally Grounds - a place I found fascinating. We spent many hours there and could have spent another half day exploring it alone. You might also enjoy the Imperial Castle of Nuremberg.

Thank you I forgot the beer. You lever off the crown cork and suddenly you can smell bonfires. Such an experience!

That beer tasted like rancid bacon to me:), but then again, I'm not a fan of beer in general.

Another endorsement for the Documentation Center in Nürnberg. We spent a couple hours there. Easy to reach on public transit. Germany chose this title for the undertaking rather than "memorial" so as to avoid any indication of pride at what the Nazis did, frame it as an object lesson in how such horrors emerge.

If hotel cost is a factor, Bamberg has "old school" prices. I'm flying out of Nuernberg coming up, but staying an hour away in Bamberg because the hotel prices in Nuernberg are through the roof (like, hundreds, instead of under a hundred). This was true when visiting friends there last September, and true for my two upcoming trips out of Nuernberg airport (I live in Hamburg, but it's way cheaper to take the train 1st class 5 hours to Nuernberg and fly to Sardinia bzw. Sicily from there on Ryanair than to fly most ANYwhere from Hamburg).

hrs.de is the most popular German site for hotel bookings, but you can use booking.com also. Just make sure you select the English option :)

Spot on from Lavandula, though if you really want to go nitty-gritty local, individual city/town websites like this one https://en.bamberg.info/hotels-ferienwohnungen/ for Bamberg list what are sometimes the cheapest options including tiny b&bs and apartments (though Booking.com and others also have extended themselves into private rooms and apartment offerings). We stayed in a small Bavarian town (Mittenwald) recently where everything on the major websites was sold out except for a 160 Euro hotel, and instead paid 30 Euro/room/night including breakfast for a beautiful farmhouse setting (eggs from their own chickens) with gorgeous views of the Alps right from the bed - - found through a local chamber-of-commerce listing.
