Baltic Rain

We will be in several Baltic countries from mid August to Sept. 4th. We are bringing an umbrella, but not sure what coat to bring. Does it sprinkle mostly - so that a rain-resistant light coat or jacket would work? Or would it be better to prepare for heavy rain and bring a water proof coat or jacket? I hate to have to pack a coat, and I'm actually considering a rain proof thin poncho. Yes, I know that marks me as a tourist....but, I am one!

It could easily pour while you are there. We always take small very compact umbrellas and we also use the thin plastic ponchos when necessary. People who are sopping wet do not look like "tourists;" they actually look pathetic.

Take a light raincoat and an umbrella. If it rains, use one or the other or both as the conditions dictate. Neither is going to add significant weight or volume to your luggage.

Truth.

They will also feel pathetic, which is worse than just "looks".

Bring a quality, light rainproof jacket (Gore-tex or similar) and a warm fleece, sweater or cardigan that fits underneath. Rainy days are likely to be chilly. A small folding umbrella is also good to have.

But, how hard does it rain? Downpours or sprinkles?

sparkchaser Jun 8th, 2015 09:14 PM

It depends. Sometimes it sprinkles, sometimes the heavens open up. Hence the suggestions for an umbrella and a rain jacket.

Bring an umbrella, a light rain jacket and then find the nearest restaurant/bar/pub when the downpour starts and treat yourself to a local beverage.

Solid advice, kleeblatt.
