Bakeries in Edinburgh
 

We have read that the bakeries in Edinburgh are wonderful. What are your favroite spots? And what do they usually sell beyond scones and meat pies?

you really have to go into the suburbs to find good local bakeries, there are hundreds of Greggs bakeries around but they an NOTHING like the real thing.personally my local bakery is very good not cjanged much in over 60 years,
It is on Moredun Park Road in the south of the city, my favotites in there are their Bridies, apple slice and fruit sloce.I try to avoid the place these days as i need to lose weight.
the bread rolls and hand made breads are very good especially the "well fired" ie burnt ones.
some great pubs for lunch ,in the city center the Worlds End is a favourite of mine and Berts bar at the west End does great steak pies.

just talking to some folk yesterday, there is a new "old fashioned" bakery opened up on South Clark street near the top of Minto street. very easy to get to from the city center.I personally have no idea what its like but the folk i was talking to said it is very good and a very traditional style place.

We are staying on a street with the unfortunate name of Spittal and I found Clark and Minto which is a little less than two miles away and Bert's which is 1.5 mile away.

An indicator that it was historically the site of an hospital. cf Spitalfields just outside the City of London.

Yes, Dr. D it was the mildest of jokes since, of course, the spellings are not the same.

on a staurday there is a farmer Market on Castle Terrace a 2 minute walk away, you will find some bakery goods there.Don't know what map you are looking at but Berts bar is only about a 10 minute walk away.
No 2 bus from nearby Bread street will take you onto South Clark street in about 10 minutes, or if you are any where near the Royal mile ,the Bridges which cuts the street in half has many busues that go alomg south Clark street and Minto street (3, 5, 7 ,29,37,49 and possibly a few more (the no % turns at the junction of South Clark street and Minto street and That is where I believe the bakery is.
BTW if you have a car DO Not attempt to drive around the area, Due to Tram Works, even for a local it's a nightmare and at the moment with diversions at Haymarket, West end ,East end and the whole lenth of Princes Street it is not a place to be driving.
The Spittal street area is not affect by any roadworks but will be likely affected by the traffic from diversions.

If you have been using Google maps for directions then they are way wrong with Berts bar,It is in William street but Google maps show it as Dundas Street a good half mile away from where it should be.even though Google maps have it as William street.

We will not be keeping a car, as driving on the left has always stymied me. And I must have chosen the wrong Bert's.

No it's Google that has it wrong not you,I checked the directions google give and they are way out.
Berts bar is good , nice range of Scottish beers and Pub Grub prices that are pretty good,I eat there 3 or 4 times a year, across the Road is Teuchters which does pretty good food and has a fantastic range of whiskies if you want to try them, just ask for the whisky list (a A4 size folder) rather that try and search the shekves.
