Hi, I was searching for a one-way trip by train from Vienna to Munich on April 27, and found there was a variety of prices. I found the BAHN would cost from as low as 29E (saver fare) to 80E (standard). The website(www.bahn.de) says the saver fare applies to only return trips and not to one-way trips. Does that mean that I can't get tickets for 29E for my trip and I can only get tickets by the standard fare? Would they be able to identify whether my trip was one-way or return? -_-+ Please advise!

I would imagine they could tell if your trip was a return as my interpretation of that is that you must buy a round-trip ticket to get that fare. You could buy a round-trip (return) ticket and then eat the return if your only other choice is the 80E ticket--RT would be 58E.

I thought your idea was GREAT and tried to purchase a round ticket on the website, but this time the saver fare does not seem to apply! So what I'm guessing is that a round-trip ticket and a return-ticket are different. This is how the website defines Saver Fares : "Sparpreis 25 and Sparpreis 50 saver fares are only obtainable for return journeys (i.e. not for one-way travel), for specified trains and from a minimum price upwards." This means that I am only eligible to buy the tickets at the standard fare, right?

I am not sure I fully grasp what you are saying and asking.

I just went to the Deutsche Bahn web site and looked up the schedule from Munich to Vienna West (Your only reasonable destination in Vienna.)

If you leave at 7:26 am, you can get a one way fare for €29 in second class.
First class is €39, and worth it in my opinion. (others may not agree.)

If you want the no change of trains connection at 9:27, the lowest fare is no longer available (highly limited) but the €39 fare was shown as available.


I presume you can still make the purchase like I did a couple of years ago. I used my credit card to pay and was sent a pdf file from which I could print my own ticket.

The restriction is to a specific time and date. You must also present the exact same credit card to verify that you are you.

The ticket is printed on standard A4 typewriter paper from an ink jet or laser printer. It has a coded field which the conductor can scan with a hand-held reader.

YOU don't need the specials you describe to get this fare. The Spar this and that as I recall require the purchase of a pass.

For a one time shot, you cannot beat it.

Changing trains is in Salzburg and I have done that a time or two. It is not bad at all unless you are loaded with luggage or have a physical problem. (I changed trains in Salzburg about 5 months after hip replacement surgery, and having to carry two bags and support my self with a walking cane was not all that easy. But I got there.

I think I know where that confusion comes from.
When you try to buy a one-way ticket from Vienna to Munich for April 27, and opt for the 8.22am direct train, it shows several fare options. When you click on the "?" for additional information, a new page pops up which detailed fare infos and restrictions.

BUT: The latter information describes the restrictions of fares called "Sparpreis 25 and 50" (saver fare 25%, 50%), while the price and restrictions quoted for your connection are for a fare type called "Europe Special Austria". So the info is correct, but not for your type of fare.

The only restrictions which apply for "Europe Special Austria" fare is that your ticket will be only valid on the specific train you get it for.

Since the €29 2nd classs Europe Special Austria is already sold out on April 27 for the 8.22am train, you may want to scroll down a bit to see if 1st class €39 Special fare is still available. It costs exactly the same as the next available Europe Special Austria fare for 2nd class.

Go to BudgetEuropeTravel.com, and call their 800 number. They are extremely knowledgeable and helpful.

They helped me understand the train fares, when we traveled by train from Vienna to Prague to Munich. You can buy your tickets from them w/o mark-up, and receive paper tickets in the main for a very small additional fee.

It's worth the peace of mind to have tickets reserved and in hand before you leave home.

It might also be that the fare is only available on Return (round) trips that start in Germany.
