bagpacking netherlands
 

hi everyone!
So...I´ll be bagpacking in netherlands this August with my boyfriend....
The plan is to spend 2 days in each place, or visit some of the places for one day...
We thought about visiting: Amsterdam, Utreque, Gouda, Rooterdam, Delft, Leiden and Haarlem...These are not the final choices just some of the places people told us we should visist...
And we also want to visit the Floriade...

So...my questions are:

what do you guys think about our choices??
And...wich of these places need 2 days and wich of these places can be visited in 1 day?
The travel betwin each of these places are easy by train? or does it take a lot of time???

By the way...i´ve been searching some hotes in Amsterdam and they all seem very expensive, is Holland an expensive place to visit and stay?

You could visit all of those places from a single base.
Hotels in Amsterdam in particular, but also in the other major cities can be expensive.
Look at smaller towns, hostels (Stayokay are teh official HI hostels in the Netherlands - you could stay at one in or near any of the towns you want to visit) or B&Bs, or maybe a houseboat or apartment, and just visit the places on your list by train. I am not sure if any of the universities offer holiday accommodation in August - maybe not since the first years start then with their introduction weeks.

You could consider visiting the coast or further north too, but Do get on with finding somewhere to stay soon - August is a popular holiday month.

When searching make sure you spell the towns and cities correctly - Utrecht, Rotterdam.

Floriade is in the south of the Netherlands and you would need to find somewhere down there to stay - it is too much to do as a day trip from any of your mentioned towns/cities.

Leiden might be a natural base, and a pleasant one -- though Haarlem could work too. Amsterdam is most central of all, but it is kind of grotty compared to your other idylls, especially having to re-enter the jarring tourist onslaught every night after being in more easygoing Dutch towns during the day. You might find something pleasant and affordable at this Holland B&B website - - just make sure that whatever you get will be convenient to transportation:

what about the floriade...can i do it on a day trip using laiden as base? or should i find a place to stay neer by? and if i should, where????? :)

Netherlands is not especially expensive - but it depends on what you are comparing it too. Anyplace in europe is more expensive than almost anyplace in the US _ but I assume from your post that you are from another part of the world. Netherlands - or all of europe - may be much more expensive than prices you are used to.

And IMHO I don;t see the point of all that moving around - you could stay in one or two places and make day trips by train to some of the other towns (Netherlands s quite small).
