Baggage storage when visiting Naples museum
We are traveling by train from Rome to Naples and would like to head directly to the Archeology museum.....then to the hydrofoil for the trip to Sorrento. We are scratching our heads as to what to do with our luggage when we go to the museum. Does anyone have any ideas on how we handle this problem? Are their lockers at the train station that we can leave the bags...or any other ideas that do not require a trip back to the train station before heading to the hydrofoil?

According to the Trenitalia web site there is baggage storage at Naples Centrale.

There used to be storage at the port. I'll see if I can find the link. You need to be aware that ferries/hydrfoils do not run late. If in summer, around 7pm will be the latest.

In the parking area at Molo Beverello. Can't find prices/hours, but here is the link.

If you plan to see Pompeii from Sorrento, consider leaving the archeology museum until your return trip. The museum makes more sense, is more enjoyable after you've seen the site.

Take a cab to the museum and store your bags there - it is permitted to do that.
DO NOT RELY on the luggage storage at Napoli Centrale - it is frequently closed due to strikes - and often just closed for no apparent reason. The Naples Archaeological Museum is closed Tuesdays. Also, be aware that some of the rooms in the museum can be closed due to staff shortages. The explanatory signage is minimal so you will need a guide book which you can buy at the book shop beside the ticket office. |
N.B. - any reason for hydrofoil to Sorrento when the trains are cheaper and there are more of them?
IF the left luggage is open at Napoli Centrale, just leave your bags there and when you're done at the Museum, return and take the train on to Sorrento. The port at Sorrento is on the water line and either has an elevator or a long, steep walk up to the main town centre - dragging bags in this situation is awkward. The Circumvesuviana train drops you right in the middle of town. |
My experience is the same as Houseofthevetti - I checked my bags at the museum.
