Baden-Baden Stopover

Considering a 1 or 2 night stop in September en-route from Amsterdam to Geneva and wondering if Baden-Baden would be a good choice. Would be interested in getting some info on if the spas are worth a visit.

hi there,

well, the Spas are shure worth if You are interessted in these things. There are 2 very different. The first is "Caracala", a new/modern one. The other is the "Friedrichsbad" with the flair of the old times.

have fun
Gar

PS: You know bathing is without clothes?

Len, are you driving or taking a train? Last summer, on a LONG drive back from Austria, we stopped for one night at the hotel on the autobahn rest stop just outside Baden-Baden. Not much "atmosphere" but it was set well back from the road under trees, was clean and comfortable, with ample covered parking for hotel guests. The restaurant attached to the hotel was certainly adequate for a stopover and we enjoyed watching all the travelers come and go. Of course, we probably liked it most because about 5 minutes after we checked in, the skies opened up with a huge thunderstorm and downpour, flooding local roads and causing traffic jams all around...we were glad to be off the highway and under shelter
While I thought Baden-Baden was pleasant, my husband was disappointed. His family lived in Baden Baden a while ago (his grandparents managed a spa) and in his view, the town has gone downhill. I did notice a lot of day trippers, a McDonald's right in the heart of one of the main squares, and rather rude and indifferent service at the cafes where we stopped for coffee and cake (in truth, we got much better service at the autobahn rest stop, not what we were expecting). Also, as I wandered some of the side streets, I noticed a lot of stores were closed. Not closed for summer holidays, but closed period.
However, the paths and park near the casino are certainly pretty and it seems like a decent choice for a stopover if there isn't another place with more appeal to you.
BTilke (Brussels)
