Baden Baden or Basel

Hi,

I will be in Freiburg im Breisgau in mid Sept. If I have a free day for day trip, which would be more interesting, Basel or Baden-Baden? My interest is more on nature,old town, wandering about and I'm not a museum person. I have been to Bern and Lucerne but this will be my first time in Germany. After Freiburg, I will be going to Colmar for 2 nights. Thanks.

Hi M,

>I have been to Bern and Lucerne but this will be my first time in Germany.<

Seems like you answered your own question.

Enjoy Baden Baden

2nd vote for Baden Baden. It is a lovely spot to wander about. Lots of shops and beautiful buildings to admire and some outstanding pastry shops. Basel is more of a museum town, but it has a whole different vibe, however it is on your way to Colmar, only an hr or so away. You can't really make a mistake with either choice.

Haven't been to Basel, so can't comment on it.

But, I was in Stuttgart and didn't like it so checked out after one night and went to Baden Baden... best choice I could have made!

As annetti says, it is a lovely spot to wander around. The morning after my arrival, the Rotary club was sponsoring a fundraiser along the Lichtentaler Allee... food, wine, and a band at 11am! Great!

Continuing down the Allee, you come across some lovely rose and dahlia gardens. I walked down to the Abbey and Brahms' summer home then took a bus back into 'town'.

The casino is absolutely beautiful! The entire town is wonderful. And, then there are the baths... I didn't use them. But, they are highly recommended by others.

Basel has some beautiful historic neighborhoods - around Spalentor and St Alban's Tor, among others, and beautiful natural areas on the edges (Riehen, for example) but Baden-Baden sounds like a better fit.

IMO, the regional trains offer a more pleasant ride from Freiburg to Baden Baden compared to the ICE. The ICE is faster, of course, but usually crowded with business travelers; things are more relaxed on the regional trains.

Hi,
Great, Baden baden it is.Actually I am leaning towards Baden baden but hubby wants to go to Basel. Now, it would be easier for me to convince him;
I'm considering stopping in Baden baden on the way to Freiburg instead of backtracking to save cost and time. Is 5 hours or so enough for wandering about and is there any luggage parking facilities in Baden Baden train station?
