I wnt on the horrible cheap package gils fortnight away about 6 years ago to Corfu. Yes there were horrible places to eat withat were geared to tourists i.e. Chinese and Indian restaurants but everyone except for a few rude tourists was lovely. This was no where near as nice a santorini but we found people very accommodating to us.

Its definately the attitude of ther person visiting that make a difference. the shop owner we went to several times was a bit off with us one day and my friend asked if he was ok...turns out his father was run over in Athens by a tourist on a moped. He was by himself running the shop and worried sick about his father in hospital. We went to buy drinks and small stuff we needed every day from him and check in with him about his dad and chat and he was wonderful and begged us not to rent mopeds and tolds us where to drink and eat etc.

I often find if people are a bit off at first once you chat to them for a bit or compliment their restaurant etc they really loosen up. We all have tough days.

You're so right Siobhan. Reminds me of the guy who ran a hotel I stayed in just outside San Gimigniano. He was really shirty with us all week, refusing to have a drink with us when we offered and basically giving us the cold shoulder. In the end my friend confronted him and he said 'I'm sorry, you're right, you're graphic designers and my wife is a graphic designer. She left me last month and you gave me bad memories'. Who'd have thought? He joined us for a drink after we told him not to be so stupid.

I think enough has been said in defense of the Greek people. We had a lovely experience when in Greece for 2 weeks.
I"ll add this about the fries, though.
Greeks are not copying Americans when making fries. It is part of their traditional cooking. I was raised by Greek immigrant parents in the US and ate purely Greek food growing up, and home-made fried potato wedges were a big part of my childhood culinary experiences.

"rude service, poor food (geared to "tourists" and not athentic), rip-opff cab drivers, unhappy locals. Overun with tourists"

Sounds just like Corfu town, 1967. Great to see Greece hasn't changed.
