And to think all these years and more than 60 trips to Europe and God knows how many trips elsewhere I've been violating the where-to-put-your-irreplaceables rules! SHAME on me!

I'm a day pack person too when I travel- just bought a new one - Black Diamond is the company - Bullet is the model - great pockets, not huge, and ballistic nylon - 39.99 - they have a website that lists local dealers.

I love my Rick Steves day pack, but I would not carry money or passports in it, just umbrella, guide book, tissues, camera, etc. In "risky" environments such as crowded buses or metros it needs to be worn in front or on one shoulder hanging under the arm, where no one can unzip it or cut it open. Really important papers, money and credit cards should be hidden under your clothes (though I can't recommend the neck wallets that we hated on our trip). I understand that scientists are working on cross-breeding humans with kangaroos so that future generations will be born with convenient and secure pouches, eliminating the need for money belts, day packs, and baby carriers, and really improving human potential for playing basketball.

Happytourist, Thanks for the tip about ebags.com. I just bought a backpack/sling type of purse that looks like it will be great. It's the "Aurielle-Carryland 'Pebble Backpack' Oval Backpack/Sling."

I really like their website because of the customer evaluations. Sounds like you did your research and found just the right bag for you! Have a good trip.

I agree with easytraveler. Not only is the Rick Steves daypack great for Europe, but I use it when I'm home for the dogpark and for day hikes.
