Back To Prague
 

This will be my second trip to Prague. I was there last time in Nov/Dec and it was cold!!
I am going this time over the Labor Day weekend period.
Last time I stayed at the Marriott Hotel. It was beautiful but a typical modern hotel in a nice area but a bit far from the center.
I am thinking about staying at the Ambassador Hotel this time. It looked like it had a lot of charm and a fantastic location. Anyone here ever stay there or have any experience with this hotel?
I am also interested in any suggestions for nightlife in Prague. I prefer a more upscale kind of atmosphere. I have heard mention that Duplex is a good place to visit. Last time I went to Bugsy which was ok.

Hi- Just returned from Prague...had 3 nights there. It was my first trip...can't help you on the nightlife scene...we were out late and it is an active city, but didn't do clubs etc.
We did stay at the the Ambassador. The rooms were nice...decorated a little more regionally than some...jacuzzi tub, hotel safe in room, nice wet bar...huge bathroom. The location was perfect. Right on Wenchlasas square where all the action is. Easy walk to Charles bridge and the main train station. Subway access a block or so away. Good internet cafe around 3 blocks if you exit hotel and turn left. Plenty of resteraunts, shops and museams in walking distance. Hope you enjoy your trip.

If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for the room and did you use an internet booking? I am trying to find the best price for this hotel as we speak.

I don't mind you asking, however, I was with a tour. It was the last place on the tour and my friend and I did extend our trip, so I saw the price that Gate1 paid...around $140-150 per night. I don't know what kind of prices you are finding...this was my first tour, I usually travel independent so I hadn't compared prices. The tour companies may have different deals. Sorry I can't be more of a help. Hope you find a decent price cause you can't beat the location of the hotel.

Thanks for the information Heather. I tried to reserve a room at the Ambassador but they are all sold out for my september dates. I tried contacting them directly and then also using several travel agents and online travel sites and consolidaters and no one was able to find a room for me there.
I have "settled" instead on the Metamorphis, although "settled" I don't think is the right word. The more I learned of this hotel, it's location and all the excellent reviews it got the more happy I became. I am anticipating a great stay and I booked it directly through the hotel and they were extremely helpful.
Once in Prague I will visit the Ambassador and see how it compares with the Metamorphis in so far as future visits go.
I will be happy to file a trip report when I return.
Now all I need are some good restaurant recommendations. Last time I was in Prague my favorite place to eat was La Provence. What a great place with fantastic atmosphere and food located down in a cellar. I shall return!

You are lucky. The Metamorphis is in a much better location. I was in Prague last week and stayed in another hotel, but when I saw the Metamorphis I thought that was the ideal place to stay, in a nice quiet square just nearby Old Town Square.

I guess however that the Metamorphis has no air conditioned.

Metamorphis does have a/c rooms and I got one of them :-))

Are you a musician? I'm a violinist, and go to Prague every summer for a music festival. Will leave in a few weeks for this year's journey - my 7th time over there.

Anyway, Duplex is a cool place. It used to be Fromin (way back in the 90's), but it has changed hands several times. It is a multi-level dance club by night, and a good restaurant by day. Very nice views over Wenceslas Square (has open decks on the higher floors). Radost is supposedly the hottest spot, but have never been there. Lucerna music club has some good shows. Saw Branford Marsalis there (also back in the 90's!) You won't meet many Czechs at any of these places. The entrance fees are too high. A lot of jazz clubs have opened up, but some of the jazz is not the greatest... Another cool place is Bazaar in Mala Strana on Nerudova. It has a great rooftop terrace. The food can be great, or horrible. Order the chicken. They have live music every night, and the bottom floor lounge turns into a dance club in the late evening.

The festival is called Ameropa, and the website is www.ameropa.org

You are welcome to attend any of the concerts, and they are in locations all throughout the city, although we are based at a conservatory in Zizkov (Prague 3).

We will have concerts starting on July 26th, and running through August 9th, I believe. They are usually listed in the Prague Post, as well, but there are sometimes errors in the paper, so it pays to double check anything listed in the Post.

Feel free to email me with questions, etc. I know the festival (and Prague!)as well as anyone there, since it will be my 6th time at that one. I'm leaving on July 20th..

Thanks Ann Marie, I checked out the website this morning and we may try and come to the 2:00 concert on Aug 2, Saturday ( I think that's the date, anyway, it's a Saturday concert).
