When got home from Europe I wanted to extend it just a little but so we went out to La Madeleine which is a great little French -cafeteria style -restaurant. Had French Onion Soup! It was goood!

We never feel like cooking when we get back. Usually we'll order in at least for the first couple of meals, so that means a choice of Chinese, Thai, Greek, pizza, Indian, chicken wings, whatever. Luckily there are lots of takeout places around that deliver!

One of the best meals I ever had was 25 years ago after 3 months in England. It was a Hot Dog and Coke at JFK as soon as I got off the plane. Yum! Now I go for the chicken soup and cold, cold 1% milk---sometimes with Hershey's syrup!

to Kam: I second that hot dog and Coke at the airport....after our first trip to England, we craved one all the way home in the plane, and bought one as soon as we cleared customs! Thanks for bringing back the memory.....lol!

I'll confess a bit more - but please don't tell my "foodie friends" - they would disown me: a Popeye's 2 piece: spicy, breast, wing, fry, biscuit and a coke (mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maximum culpa)

Anything that doesn't involve sharp implements (I get real clumsy when I'm sleep deprived, and real homicidal when I'm Europe deprived), thinking, or high temperatures: macaroni and cheese out of a box (if the milk isn't clumpy), nuked frozen burritos (3 for a buck), ice cream, Sam Adams pale ale, Oreos. And Papa John's Bringmeapizza - provided I have something in my wallet besides Monopoly money ("if I order the pizza with feta cheese, will you accept drachma?").

Way to go elvira! I'm still laughing. My tastes are simple. This time my son had been in residence while we were gone, so I was assured there would be fresh milk and the makings of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on multi-grain bread when we got back. There were also toaster waffles, but I don't do maple syrup anymore. Since we couldn't keep our eyes open much past 9PM, we didn't want to get too fancy.

Sandy, the Brits were disgusted at you with your fries and ketchup? What on earth do you think McDonalds gives us to dip our 'chips' in over here, baba ganouge?

I'll never forget my first trip to Europe, for seven weeks at 19. We were on about week five, and stumbled across gold in Interlaken: a small jar of PEANUT BUTTER! We spread it on bread, apples, chocolate, our fingers, you name it. It was a glorious, familiar taste of home.

Nowadays, it's Mexican food, hands down!

Having grown up in San Diego, it would have to be nothing but Mexican fast food: fish tacos, chorizo, taquitos with guacamole, quesadillas...

When we hit Gatwick or Heathrow, we have waffles, pancakes or french toast or sweet rolls....ice,ice, ice and water. When we get home, salad, blue cheese dressing, Mexican food. Really miss good mixed salads.

Apart from all the yummy things everyone has listed, what I truly miss is a glass of Diet Coke or water with L-O-T-S of ice!!! I just returned from Rome and when I asked for a Coke lite with lots of ice, it consisted of 3 ice cubes. I think I depleted their entire stock!!!!

Pancakes, crisp bacon, two eggs over easy and lots and lots of good cold milk! Then, cheeseburgers from our local pool hall, with grilled onions and huge dill pickle spears....I always lose weight when I travel, and this feeding frenzy usually takes care of that little bonus!

After a 2-week carbo diet in Italy (pasta and bread), our first meal was grilled ribeye, baked potato with LOTS of butter, and fresh asparagus. YUM!!!

After living in Italy for 2 years I have found eating out Italian to be very disappointing; however, being in L.A. means no problem getting ingredients for cooking at home.

My favorite Italian meals are the simplest: San Danieli prosciuto with ripe figs in the summer; sweet cherry tomatoes with mozzarella di buffala and basil in the winter (believe it or not, Costco is a great source for this); pasta with home-made pesto from home-grown basil, parmigiano-reggiano, pine nuts, garlic and extra-virgin olive oil, yum; rigatoni alla Norma, with a sauce made from tomato purée, onion, olive oil, eggplant and extra-virgin olive oil, and the list goes on...

That great NJ/NY pizza! We couldn't get it in NC either, so we've been deprived for almost 4 years (aside from twice yearly trips back to NJ)!!!

Nachos (tough to come by good ones in the US anyway) -- with cheese, jalepenos and tomatoes. Nothing else, except a side of sour cream and a side of salsa.

Sourdough bread (now having been out here, I won't touch American bread other than sourdough)

And as much as I adore the coffee here in France, a venti caramel machiatto (with whipped cream)from Starbucks -- and yes, I carry it with me through THE MALL. =:0
