I stayed at the Piz Buin in Guarda and absolutely LOVED it as well. Not as fancy as Meisser, but completely Swiss...clean, family run, etc. We had a second floor room with a cute little balcony. They were the nicest family and the food was outstanding.

The Piz Buin is certainly nice-looking from the outside (I didn't go in) and I trust your recommendation. I was simply omparing to the other hotels I stayed at on the trip, and the Meisser wins hands-down for friendly service, helpfulness, and comfort. I also had a nice chat with the owners about American politics.
In terms of conversations I had with other guests, the Salis would win that one. I had some delightful conversations with two German couples and one Swiss couple who were staying there.

I meant to say "comparing" not omparing!! Linda, I may try the Piz Buin when I'm in the area again to save $$, or Schuler, your recommendation of the pension in Sent.
Linda, I did go online to look at those hotels you recommended--Bellatola & Weishorn. Both look great! Those might be great to do in combination with seeing Chillon (but I would also stay in a hotel close to the castle).

susan, you can't stay much closer to Chillon than the Masson. It's an old inn with much charm and very reasonable. The people there were SO nice! It's on the outskirts of Montreux and I think we walked down the hill and caught a bus to the castle...or maybe we just walked. I liked it a lot better than staying in Montreux which was too busy for us. We also liked the little towns further down the lake...Vevey, St Sulpice, Epoisses, etc. You can stay anywhere on the lake and catch local buses and trains !

Thanks for the recommendation, Linda. This place looks like a winner! I don't like the congestion of big cities, either (Paris would be an exception). I much prefer the charm & tranquility of smaller towns or villages. So thanks again for the suggestion (and all other suggestions!!).

Susan, we are planning to see Alsace in October 2010. Your pictures certainly are steering us in this direction. We will be staying somewhere 3 nights and from what I read, it seems best to pick a central location and work from there everyday as we will have a car. Any suggestions on the htel to stay at (even though I do read alot in the thread above) plus good restaurant names? We are getting excited already. I hope the weather in early October will be beautiful. Thanks for sharing with us.

Apartments in Riquewihr: www.i-love-riquewihr.com
We spent a week in Le Colombier in Oct.; lovely little village to use as a base for day trips.
Recommended restaurants: Le Sarment d'Or in Riquewihr (it's also a hotel)
Chambard Hotel/Restaurant in Kaysersberg

Grandmere, if we were coming from Dijon and going to Colmar, can you give us some idea what the roads are like. We think they are pretty straight until we get around Colmar and then they would be windy. How is the road to Strasbourg? We are hoping thereafter to go to Reims. Any suggestions fr Dijon or Reims for hotel/b&b? Thank you for your help. We are still in the ploanning stages.

I stayed at the Palazzo Salis in September. I was lucky and had a quiet room. I also had a bathroom in the hallway. Then there was a shower room on the next floor. My room was a nice size with a single bed, lots of wood. I loved it. My cost was 100 CHF per night. The entire hotel is fabulous, antiques everywhere. There was also use of a computer-free of charge.
