B&Bs on Devon's (UK) coast
Hi - Any recommendations for sites or accommodation on Devon's coastline? Thanks...

Jill: First of all, the drive is beautiful. In Plymouth, visit the Plymouth Dome, see the Mayflower Steps, and walk around the Hoe. One of my favorite villages is Popero, which is actually over the border from Devon in Cornwall. Park at the top of the hill before the town and hike in. Have a cup of Devonshire cream tea someplace. Further inland, don't miss visiting the cathedral in Exeter (the capital of Devon) - it is especially beautiful at night when it is lit up. The area around Torbey is lovely. Past the border of Devon in Wessex is the town of Lyme Regis (think Meryl Streep in "French Lieutenant's Woman" on the wall out to sea; you can walk it). Also lots of Jane Austen history here, too. I would also recommend driving through Dartmoor National Park in Devon (the Hound of the Baskervilles country). When we lived in England, we used a bed & breakfast guide book entitled "Staying Off the Beaten Track in England and Wales" by Elizabeth & Walter Gundrey. You might try to find it somewhere. Enjoy your trip!

You would love the stay in Bovey Tracey, Devon...Front House Lodge owned and operated by Gail and Ian Campbell, the most welcoming hosts you could ever meet. Also in Bovey Tracey is our all time favorite restaurant, The Rumblin' Tum...just fabulous food. Can give you the phone number if you are interested, or you can just take a chance there will be room. Bovey Tracey is 14 miles west of Exeter and about 32 miles northeast of Plymouth and close to Dartmoor National Park and Dartmoor ponies. Great location for hitting all the high spots and Gail and Ian are full of info. about the area.

Jill,Do try and visit Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth and Beer on the coast in South East Devon, and a little way inland the village of Colyton. If you like visiting National Trust properties Killerton and Knightshayes court are easily reached from these places and a little further afield, on the edge of Dartmoor, Castle Drago is also a must see. If you like walking or hiking the footpaths in S.E.Devon are particularly well marked and the South Coast path is wonderful. Sorry I can't recommend any hotels but if you are looking for self catering accomodation email me and I will give you details of places we have stayed in.
