B&Bs in Scotland
Does anyone have any recommendations for B&Bs or small hotels in the following areas:
Glamis Grantown-On-Sprey Plockton or southern part of Skye Mallaig Oban Lanark Any where around these towns would work. We would like to stay under 100 pounds per night for 2 in 1 room. |
I have some files but not on this computer so I will try to get back to this tonight.
But I do have a couple of questions - why would you want to stay in Mallaig? Presumably you are thinking of the ferry to/from Skye - but there is no reason to stay in Mallaig since it is just the jumping off spot for Skye - not a destination itself. Glamis - it is a castle out in the countryside not really near any towns except Kirriemuir and Forfar. I'll assume you are visiting Glamis Castle enroute elsewhere. After your visit to the castle you would do better to head on to where ever you are going next. |
As far as staying at Mallaig. We will be staying in Plockton or on Skye the night before & taking the bridge over to Skye & spending the day sightseeing on Skye. Then I would like to take the ferry over that evening - depending on how late it runs and staying someplace close by before continuting on the next day to Oban. So anywhere near there is fine. If the ferry closes early then we could stay on Skye near where the ferry picks up and take the ferry early the next morning.
For Glamis, we will be ending up that day near Glamis & depending on our timing either see the castle late that day or spend the night close by & see the castle the next morning. So again, just somewhere close by and we will be driving up from the south. So Dundee or around that area would work. |
We spent 3 nights in the Kilchrenan House in Oban, on the Corran Esplanade. It's a grand old house with terrific views of the harbor and a good, hearty breakfast. Very homey.
BTW, we really liked the town. |
The ferries don't run at night - it will still be daylight when you get to Mallaig.
But if you are really considering staying the night in Mallaig - it makes more sense to stay over on Skye and take the first ferry across the next AM. |
Janisj, did you get a chance to check the files on your other computer? Also, instead of Mallaig, we will stay in south Skye & take the ferry the next morning like you suggested Any suggestions for B&Bs in south Skye?

here are a few in those areas to get you started:
in Alyth, not far from Glamis http://www.tighnaleigh.com/ In/near Grantown on Spey: http://www.holmhillhouse.co.uk/ http://www.ancalahouse.co.uk/index.htm http://www.westhavenb-b.co.uk/index.html On Skye I recommend staying at Sligachan - not a B&B but a hotel at the very crossroads in the center of the Isle. If that doesn't work for you - there are all sorts of B&Bs all over Skye and the TICs in Broadford or Portree can help you. http://www.sligachan.co.uk/index.htm Oban is absolutely FULL of B&Bs - http://www.wellparkhouse.co.uk/ http://www.thornloeoban.co.uk/index.html http://www.obanguesthouse.co.uk/index.asp http://www.briarbank-oban.co.uk/index.html But honestly - there are just TONS of places in and very near Oban. I don't have any personal recommendations near Lanark since I've always visited it enroute elsewhere. But this one looks interesting http://www.kirkfieldmains.co.uk/index.html |
Phaydn........we are still in the middle of our trip but noticed your question. We crossed the Skye bridge last week and stayed at the Broadford B&B (just on the right as you come into Broadford, opp the pub and on the water). We fluked it and love it. Really lovely host, small room but lovely, c/w ensuite. 50 pound for the night for a double. There was a coin laundry down the road and our host offered for me to use the line for things I didn't want to put in the dryer.
We drove to Mallaig the next morning and caught the ferry, which was a highlight. Hope this helps AD |
auusiedreamer: Hope you meant you drove to Armadale and took the ferry (to Mallaig). Driving from Broadford to Mallaig would be quite a feat :)
|
If you want to be close to the ferry, try the Ardvasar Hotel www.ardvasar.com A nice hotel with sea views and a good restaurant/pub.
|
How far a drive is it from Broadford or Sligachan hotel to the ferry at Armadale? We will be coming over the bridge and then touring Skye for a day and then taking the ferry to Mallaig. Would it be possible to spend two nights on Skye, crossing the bridge in the afternoon, spend the night, then sight see on Skye & come back spend the night and then catch the ferry the next morning?

"<i>Would it be possible to spend two nights on Skye,</i>"
sure - that is a much better idea than leaving the isle after one night. |
Ooops sorry janisj, thats what I meant. Sorry but i can always count on someone here on Fodors to set correct me when I make a mistake. ;-)
