B &B or Paris hotel?
 

My husband and I are traveling with our college age daughter to Paris in May.(After great encouragement from all of you)but now our problem is where to find a charming budget room for three. 2 years ago two of us stayed at Hotel du Globe and it was a bit of a disaster. Are there B&B's out of the city or do you have some great ideas? We've looked at Regent's Hotel in the 6th, Hotel du Cham-de-Mars, and Hotel Muguet. Has anyone stayed at these? We'd like to stay under $160 per night

Even if there were a B&B outside of Paris you would spend a lot of time travelling to and from. The Muguet is a lovely hotel. I have read on another board that she is looking for hotels in May and many are full. You may have to jump on something quickly. Your "budget" is quite ample.

I've stayed twice at Grand Hotel Leveque, in 1990 and 2002, and was satisfied with the hotel both times. It's affordable (about $85 for double), conveniently located (7th Arrdt., near Eiffel Tower) and well-maintained. That it's listed in all the guide books (Rick Steves, etc.) and thus popular with many American tourists may be a turnoff to some, but it certainly didn't put a damper on our experience.

Thanks these are helpful posts. Champ du Mars quoted only $94 for a double and Regent's $110.00 but I'd really like some current first hand reports. You've convinced me to forget the bed and breakfast idea.

I haven't stayed at those hotels, but you will find a lot of comments, plenty from 2002,if you search on the hotel name and select 'France' . . . Also, there may be recent comments under 'Rants and Raves' but I didn't look there to see just now. . .

All the posts are on here (more or less) for several years, but you can't just select ones from 2002. Just search on the appropriate name, and then they are automatically listed in reverse date order. There have been lots of comments on Champ du Mars, at least, probably within the past year, I'd imagine.<BR><BR>YOur budget is enough for two rooms at a good budget hotel, just about -- with a collegeage daughter, it might be better to get a double and single at a place like that (Muguet, Champ de Mars, etc). I seem to remember someone mentioning a large room at Hotel de la Motte Picquet -- I know Regent's has one with a loft, also, but I haven't stayed there (others have on there, I remember).<BR><BR>

I was looking into La Motte Picquet and their rates are very high-new management now.

By the way is 6-7 months' advance reservation at Hotel Muguet reasonable if we want an Eiffel Tower view room?

I've stayed at the Champ de Mars (May 2001) and enjoyed it very much. Our room was one of the smaller ones, but it was quite lovely, the service was gracious, and it's a very pleasant location.

I've stayed at the Muguet (July 2000), Champs de Mars (Oct 2001), and the Grand Leveque (Nov 2001) and found all three acceptable. If I had to rank them, the Muguet would be at the top, the Leveque (a great bargain), and then the Champs de Mars.

Regarding Hotel du Champ de Mars, I had sent two email inquiries once last year and another one last week, no replies. I had the correct email address as it's directly taken from their website link. I guess they figure they've got alot of demand to be bothered with answering all their emails. At least Muguet, although very popular as well, took the time to reply. Sounds like a much better hotel choice.

I would be amazed if you could find a room at the Muguet for May. They book about 3-4 months in advance, and still they are usually booked solid. Very popular with business people as well as leisure travelers, I loved the neighborhood. The rooms were very quiet, clean, comfortable. Walking distance to two metro stations, also to Eiffel Tower, Musee D'Orsay, Musee Rodin, Le Invalides, there is a nearby underground parking garage and Hertz car rental agency (if you choose to go on a day trip on your own; D-Day Beaches, Rouen). There was an adorable poodle that &quot;owned&quot; the lobby and I recently learned &quot;Framboise&quot; the Turtle has made a home at the inner court patio. I usually try different hotels, but in Paris, my choice would be to go back to the Muguet again.

If you haven't found a hotel yet, you might like to consider the Hotel Bonaparte, 61 rue Bonaparte in the 6th.

They have triple rooms, and are within your budget.
