Avoca from Glendalough.
 

My wife and I have been watching the Ballykissangel Series, and will be taveling from Dublin in the morning and going to Glendalough which we think will take us about 2 hours or so. Our plan is to spend most of the late morning and early afternoon there, then try to find Avoca -- anyone know how long it takes to get from Glendalough to Avoca? How long should we plan to be to see the sights in Avoca ( I know there is not a huge amount of things to see there...but we still want to stand on the famous bridge and see Fitzgeralds...another question is where to look for a B and B in that area...the next day we plan to go to Rock of Cashel. Is Killkenny too far away ?Thanks for your suggestions!

I'm sorry I can't tell you how long it will take to get to Avoca because we were with friends and they drove. I can tell you it was a day trip from Dublin.

I can also tell you it takes very little time to see it. It's actually one main street just over a little bridge. (Okay, perhaps there are more streets, but just one that you'll care to see). You can walk the street, stop into Fitzgerald's pub, hit the souvenir shops and the woolen shop (which has some nice things and bargain bins) and be out in an hour. Really. So make sure it's part of a bigger day.

You can drive Glendalough to Avoca in under 30 minutes. I'm told there are B&Bs in the area, and I think Fitzgeralds even offers accommodation. Kilkenny and Cashel are about 38 miles from each other and easily reached in much less than a day's driving from Avoca. We enjoyed both places: the Rock was interesting, while Kilkenny was the brighter and livelier town to stay in.

If you're heading further south after that, we also enjoyed Glengariff. Drop into Gouganne Barra on the way - it's stunning!

Yes, half an hour from Glendalough to Avoca. Be careful as there are two Glendaloughs in Ireland. If you're using GPS you want the Glendalough in County Wicklow. I wonder how many people have that mistake...

Having also been great fans of Ballykissangel, we were astounded at how little there actually was to the 'village'!

The bridge and pub were the main features. We had a most enjoyable meal at the woolen mill shop - just a short walk out of the town. When we got there we discovered they had a large carpark, but that little walk was a definite necessity to stretch our legs.

I don't know how you're traveling around Ireland, but I took a tour that encompassed both Glendalough and Avoca. Check out http://www.railtoursireland.com and look for the Wicklow-Mountaineer-Ballykissangel-Glendalough tour. You get some time in Avoca to tour the wooden mill, have lunch and walk around town. Have fun!
