Avignon Trains

Heading to Provence in the spring. For 2 weeks will be based in Avignon to travel around the area. As I will be heading out almost daily by train I am confused between Gare Avignon Centre and Avignon TGV. Thanks.

PS: will already have stayed in Aix and Arles so do not need a better city to stay in.

What is your confusion exactly? You can see where both are on a map. The Centre one is ithe old one that's been around decades probably, nea the center, just outside the main old wall, you can walk from it to the centre ville if you wanted. This is for TER and more local trips usually. THE TGV station is a bit outside the main city on the major highway going down past the river. TGVs will arrive/leave from there. There is some shuttle between the two, I believe, but you'd have to search for that schedule if you want it. I'm sure there is some city bus probably.

They couldn't build a major new TGV station in the center, plus all the tracking needed. This isn't unusual, they do that in other cities also (like Aix).

The SNCF website will show you your train options for where you want to go in terms of station.

In any case the two stations are llinked by a rail shuttle.

To add to the complications, a few destinations are served by both slow and fast trains depending on the Avignon station, all run by the same government company. Trainline, the British-based reseller, will show you both options, for a small fee to buy the ticket. Worth it, in my view, to avoid the baulky SNCF site.
