Avignon inexpensive accommodation
 

My wife and I are looking to reserve cheap accommodation in or near Avignon for 4 nights in April 2004. We will have a car. Does anyone have any suggestions?

There are several chain "motels" on the outskirts. I stayed in an Ibis (they have a website). No charm but clean and they have easy parking. Great for day trips in the region and when we went into Avignon itself there was plenty of parking just outside the city walls (train station area). About 5-10 minute drive from city walls to the Ibis motel.

Hi Jim - a few years ago friends stayed at the Hotel Mignon on rue Joseph Vernet and liked it. It's located within Avignon, near the old train station. I think it was recommended in the Let's Go guide book. You can look there for other recommendations or check the Rick Steves book for budget accommodations.

I stayed at Hotel Angleterre last week,Euro52 per night. The Hotel is inside the town,on a quite street (Bld Raspail), close to wall and one of the gates(easy access to go out of twon), the room is basic but clean.

I was also going to recommend Hotel Mignon if you are looking for inexpensive accommodations. I haven't stayed there yet but have selected it for Oct. www.hotel-mignon.com

Since you have a car, you might consider staying just across the river in the charming little village of Villeneuve-les-Avignon at the Hotel d'Atelier (de l'Atelier?). The hotel is a clean little 2 star, that has lots of charm itself.

go with grandmere. you can leave the car there when you want to go into Avignon. you can walk across the bridge, take the bus or a boat across in minutes.Save on gas when you aren't going out of town.

It probably doesn't yet have a website or email address; some of the smaller places don't. But the above site will give you phone and fax numbers.

Grandmere, thanks for the help so far. I have been looking at Hotel l'atelier and also the YMCA. As you say, l'atelier does not show an email address. What do you think of the YMCA? It seems to offer guided tours as well as having a nice location, plus car parking. Do you think the ambience of l'atelier would make it a better place to stay? Your decision. Thanks.

I don't know anything about the YMCA, but when I spend the effort, time, and $$ to go to Europe, I want as much local ambience as I can get. Perhaps (opr perhaps not) the Y offers it, but for sure the little hotels do.

Grandmere, I received an email from the atelier. Have you stayed there? There's an option of a garage for the renatl car, 7 euros. Should we take this or can we just park in the street? How far is the hotel from the river? Thanks again.

I did stay there, but it was at Christmastime, several years ago. We were able to park on the street at that time; I don't know about April. Do you have to reserve the garage space in advance? As I remember, it's not far from the river, but we did not walk to Avignon, probably b/c it was cold out.
Maybe Cigalechanta will see this and give you some additional info; she spent several days in V-l-A.

I'm curious; how much do they charge for a double these days? I wonder if they will get a website and email soon; my favorite little hotel in Paris finally did, and it makes everything so much easier.

Jim, I need to read more carefully; you did say that they have email! Perhaps you could ask if they recommend the garage. Atelier was owned by a middle-aged couple when I was there; I believe they spoke some English. I was with my daughter, who is fluent in French. And maybe you speak French, also!

We stayed at the Hotel Garlande for 10 nights back in September 01. It was a nice two star hotel with friendly staff.

Nice enough location, about a block form the horlogue. The room was nice and clean and I think our rate was arounf $55 per night.
