Avignon (France) to Milan (Italy)

I need you advise. My fiance and I are staying in Avignon in August. From there we want to go to Milan. We will consider any route that does not involve flying to Paris and then from there flying to Milan. I have spent hours trying to figure out this route but I have no success so far. Please let us know if you have done this or you know of a way how to do it.
Thank you.

Simples! Avignon-Nice-Ventimiglia-Milan.

But don't expect this to be on ONE website!

1) First book Ventimiglia to Milan from €19 at www.trenitalia.com

2) Then book Avignon to Ventimiglia at www.voyages-sncf.com or www.loco2.com or www.capitainetrain.com, allowing plenty of time (45 min plus) to change at Ventimiglia. Prices vary like air fares, see what p[rices you get.

Booking opens 90 days ahead, usually.

The best way to check train routes from any one place in Europe to any other is to use the German railway website, www.bahn.de. This will give you all the information, but will only give you prices for trips within Germany. For the latter, you will have to go the railway website of the country in question.

I have done it both ways mentioned above: Lyon Geneva Brig Milano and Marseille Nice Genova Milano. Either one is fine. For overall schedules see the Bahn.com site. Check prices and buy tickets on the individual web sites for each national railroad. My daughter traveled from Paris to Milano and took the route Lyon Modane Torino Milano because her rail pass did not cover Switzerland, an oversight on my part. For an illustrated introduction to trains in Europe see http://tinyurl.com/eym5b. If you want excellent personal service in buying tickets, reservations, and or rail passes in the USA contact B.E.T.S. at http://tinyurl.com/339uf5. They are in Ann Arbor and can give you all the help you need by phone.

If you go by way of Lyon and change trains you may also need to change stations. There are two major stations in Lyon.
