I have just recently joined the Air Force and I was looking for feedback on any other AFBs that people have been stationed at or are currently stationed at. Aviano is already one of my favorites.

I have friends who have been at Aviano for almost 3 years. In fact when my friends husband gets back from Afghanistan next Spring they will be transferred back to the US. They have loved living in Italy and have had many wonderful travel opportunites around the rest of Europe. They have 2 big golden retrievers and rent a large (by European standards) 4 bedroom home. I know the base helped with all the moving stuff.
I finally got invited to come while her husband is deployed but we are going to France next summer and I can't afford another plane ticket! |
MBerberich - In the UK, there are RAF Mildenhall and RAF Lakenheath. These bases are very near each other, almost adjacent. Although they are RAF bases, both have very considerable USAF contingents. They are near Cambridge and in an area that is quite nice in itself. Both run shuttles to Heathrow so getting to London is easy. Ramstein AFB in Germany is huge and is a Space A hub as well. Ramstein is an easy drive to much of Germany as well as Austria, Luxembourg and lots of other places. There are lots of good day trips from there. You can make Paris or Amsterdam in less than a day's drive from Ramstein - I've done it, for example Ramstein to Amsterdam is about a 7 hour drive. Strasbourg France is a nice weekend trip. I haven't been to Yokota AFB in Japan, but hear it is very nice.

Basingstoke2- Thanks a lot for the info I really appreciate it! As far as the social life goes I've heard from several people that Germany is the place to be.

Your daughter is a lucky girl indeed..
When DH was in the AF we tried to get stationed in Aviano, but we never got it. We lived in Rhein Mein AFB and also lived in Asia and Hawaii..But we were never had the luck to be stationed in Italy. She is going to love it there. |
I know this ad is kind of old, but was curious on stuff. i posted a thread but no replies yet. Just wantedd some info.
I will be PCSing to Aviano Italy in the March..is anyone stationed there? What is there for a single guy to do to get into some mischief? Just really curious. I hear its beautiful and stuff to do. Just want to know the ins and outs. Where to live with the most stuff, traveling, apartments/houses for rent, the people and weather and what not? Im currently living in Las Vegas and is a very active person and have to be doing stuff constantly. What kind of phone service is provided? Can I use a jail broken Iphone? well just let me know, thanks in advance!! |
I knew a vet when I was in the Air Force. They ran a small clinic for pets of the military personnel, but his main responsibility was checking the meat and poultry used in the mess halls and sold in the commissary.
