Average B&B rate in France? Italy? Ireland? Spain?

We travelled in Germany, Cz & Sl Republics the last two years, averaging perhaps 40-45 Euro per night in pensions. What do the rates average in these countries for similar accomodations (with private bath/WC)?

In Ireland the average B&B ranges from E25 to E35. Guesthouses tend to be a bit more.

I should have mentioned that we avoided hotels and ultra-premium B&Bs, and targeted what we deemed to be about the 70th centile in terms of quality

You are asking about rural accommodations, it sounds like, as you won't find B&Bs in large cities in France. It really depends where you are. A B&B in France near a small town without a major tourist trade or in a less desirable or convenient area will be cheap, probably around what you found in Germany. A B&B in a major tourism area in peak season will be a lot more (such as Provence or the Riveria in summer)--I've seen rates more like 75-100 euro for a double room with shower/WC for a lot of the ones that are average, not high-end.

Check out Gites de France on the web. Their two ears of corn rated B&Bs range from 35 to 50 euro per room per night. You can go higher, and you can go lower. This is outside large towns and often in the middle of the countryside, so it assumes car transportation.

tomboy,
In Spain you can stay in the countryside in rural homes, "casas rurales" and "agroturismos" throughout the country for 35-55 euros and most all have private baths nowadays. And in less visited, more remote areas of the country (Extremadura, Aragón) they can even be found for 30. These aren't the "upscale boutique" B&Bs and little hotels of charm, which can run 70-90 euros or more, but instead simple but pleasant rural, farm lodgings with from 2-6 rooms on average. In the Basque Country (both Spain and France) and Navarra, we're yearly guests at several, which cost 55 euros, including cont. brk. and all have private bath, one even gives us a private terrace. The best source to find them all is www.toprural.com Search by province.

We're staying in a beautiful 4 epis (ears of corn) gite, B&B with pool, in the Pays Basque (inland, not on the coast) this summer for 73 euros, but the 3 epis gites in the same area run about 20 euros less.
We've gotten lots of ideas from the Gites de France guide "Chambres D'Hotes de Charme". There's also another I picked up in France, "130 Chambres d'hotes et Hotels de charme en France a partir de 35 euros".
