Availability of Kosher style meals in Paris
 

Hubby and I will be traveling to Paris and I try to keep Kosher (ie fish, pasta, veggies) when eating in restaurants. I speak no French and am concerned that I'll be unable to determine if the items I order have been prepared with chicken or beef stock or even if it's a kosher fish. I'm just not sure how to handle this other than strictly ordering vegetarian meals. Has anyone else had this issue and, if so, your helpful hints would be appreciated.

i stayed in the 9th and believe that it is the jewish section. saw a few jewish restaurants there.

the traditional Jewish neighborhood is in the Marais (4th), esp around rue des Rosiers, where there are several Jewish-style restaurants and bakeries, though not all are kosher.

There are several synagogues in the 9th; the Grand Synagogue is there. I think both it and the Marais have quite a few Kosher restaurants (more in the 9th, I think, maybe just because it's bigger--around Cadet metro). There are also a lot in more outer arrondisements, but I think those two areas would be best for a stay, if you want to stay near such restaurants (I like having options near my hotel). The Marais is more upscale.

I'll be staying in that area in the 9th in July/August, if you need any hotel advice.

Ira, does that fold-out menu-guide have tiny print? Do I have to whip out a magnifying glass to read it..?

I am aware that there are several kosher restaurants in Paris but my concern was more in figuring out how to eat "kosher style" food (ie no shell fish, no lard, no chicken/beef stock etc.) at non-kosher eateries. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to comment and a special thanks to you, Ira. I'm a fan of yours (didn't know you had a groupie here on Fromer's, did ya'?) and was hoping you'd respond as you always seem to give good advice. I think that the menu guide you recommend may just do the trick:)

In France, even vegetarian dishes can contain some animal products - the French aren't into vegetarian/vegan.

If you must have kosher food then you'll have to take the recommendations here or change for your holiday.
