AV or ES train, same price
If I have a choice between Av or ES at the same price which should I choose? Thanks
|
If your route has both and the times are same, then no difference. Same type of trainsets, same speed.
The AV trains will have at least one portion on real high-speed tracks, like Rome to Naples. If you're going on that part, or Milan-Turin, then doesn't matter. |
I will be going from Florence to Rome and there seems to be about 6 min. less time with AV.
Is one more comfortable than the other in 2nd class. |
All ES* and AV trains I see between Florence and Rome take around 1:35 - 1:37. Like I said, same train set for most (ETR500; except for a few ES* that may use the older ETR460), same speed.
Just get the one with the schedule that fits you. Difference is that a AV train on this route will continue to Naples on the highspeed track. A ES* most likely terminates in Rome. |
Are you talking about the 10:10a ES* that takes 1:45 rather than 1:37? This train does not depart from Florence Santa Maria Novella, the main station, but from Florence Rifredi, which I have no idea where it is.

I can tell you that the 13:20 ES9311 comes down from Bolzano and is likely to be on the older ETR460. Take the 13:31 one instead.

Thanks Rkkwan,
I had not even noticed that the train left from a different station. Thanks for that tip. So looking at other options both EV and AV are same amount of time and same price. I thought that maybe since I hear the AV are newer they might be nicer???? |
AV is a new service on the highspeed tracks. But all the existing ETR500s can run on both highspeed and lowspeed tracks, and they're all new and nice.
AVs are not new trains. |
Thanks Rkkwan,
I now understand. Like you said earlier then I will get the one most convient to my timetable. |
Supposedly, the AV trains are updated to include more space and power points to appeal to business travelers. Also welcome drinks are provided in 2nd class.
