Auxerre in Burgundy: Recs?

Hi,

I'm staying near Auxerre in mid-June. I've read several guidebooks for things to do and see in the region. But does anybody have any personal recommendations?

Thanks. This site is fun.

You must do the obligatory drive to Vezelay and see the church. The town is wonderful. The countryside in the area is beautiful. We stayed 2 nights just outside of Avallon, so we were unable to do some things, but here are a few suggestions (stuff we didn't do):
Vault d'Lugny---family owned chateau with a moat. Fabulous rooms and food. You're treated like an honored guest and will get the feel of an owner, everyone is so hospitable, even the family pets! Outside of Avallon.

Caves of Arcy-Sur-Cure, RN6 off of A6 between Avallon & Auxerre 9:30-12:30 1:30-6:00, 7y.

If you have time, I suggest you travel to Beaune/Dijon, only about 1.5-2 hrs away. Many ideas if your interested.

Bonne chance,
Gregg

If you are a Colette fan, there is a wonderful museum all devoted to her in the chateau in her childhood village, St-Sauveur-en-Puisaye. You can also see her house on the Rue de L'Hospice where there is a plaque anouncing she was born there. I loved the town of Avallon and stayed at the Moulin des Ruats, Great food(for my literary friends, MFK Fished stayed there too.)

Thank you Gregg_G and Cigalechanta!

I do plan to go to Beaune. Probably will not have time for a foray to Dijon though.

I want to brush up on my French literature and am using this trip as an excuse to do so. Thanks for the Colette reference.

Have at least one meal at La Cote St. Jacques (3 Michelin stars) in the nearby town of Joigny. We stayed there, as well as the Vault de Lugny, and both were wonderful. We enjoyed bicycling through the area, and going to the farmers' market in Joigny. Vezelay is also worth a visit.

Have fun, this is a terrific area.

I agree with previous posts that both Auxerre and Vezalay are wonderful. The view from the church at Vezealy is amazing.
In Beaunne be sure to have dinner at Le Gourmandin which is located in the main square. Fabulous, however, you will likely need a reservation.
