Wikepedia to the rescue again. Highways/ Autoroutes defined in American terms.

I find this information interesting; I was unable to use my credit card in either the automated lane on the autoroute or at the gasoline pumps a few years back , so consequently I have always used the lanes with an attendant and purchased fuel when an attendant is on duty. Fortunately I was spared the embarrassment of holding up traffic at either location as we were traveling with Parisian friends who volunteered the use of their card.

In September 2011 my VISA credit card did not work on the A8 La Provencale (Aix to Menton), operated by ESCOTA. I emailed ESCOTA after returning to the US and they told me that they had had problems with fraudulent use of US cards and had disallowed their use.

In May 2011 I used an AMEX card on the A8 (I didn't have it last year) without problem. I remember using an old AMEX charge card some years ago from the Spanish frontier up to Frejus, also without problem. I believe I also used that same card on sections between Poitiers and Paris without issue.

On my AMEX current activity I see individual charges of varying amounts for each toll passage. Not sure why the amounts vary -- will get to the bottom of that after the jet-lag subsides.

Ah, that jetlag! -- my previous post should have started "In September 2010".
