Autoeurope or Dan Dooley

Hi - me again. More details for the trip to Ireland.

Now I have to decide on where to rent a car from. I am going between Dan Dooley & Autoeurope. They seem to be close in price.
Any comments?

Linda Sep 4th, 2000 05:59 PM

We had good luck with Dan Dooley. We called the US 1-800 number and prepaid the car rental. We picked the car up in Dublin and were able to drop it off in Shannon when we flew home. Our credit union issued Gold Master Card covered the CDW insurance. We did purchase the additional insurance for #7 per day to cover any minor damage...scrapes, damaged hub caps or mirrors, etc. Yes, we did see many cars with such damage. The country roads are narrow and winding, so I think it was a good precaution.

I usually use Autoeurope for most of my trips. Ireland was different. I felt I needed a local agent with this CDW stuff needed and with trying to secure an auto-wagon. Both were close in price with the full coverage. I went with Dan Dooley...I will post my results when I return.
JOHN

John - when are you leaving / returning?

Ed Sep 5th, 2000 05:52 AM

Hi

I dont want to throw a spanner in the works but have you considered using

http://www.goireland.com/LOW/CARHIRE

I found they offered an excellent service.

Hi --I'm going in October and I was quoted a price of $250 (US) for a wagon with automatic by Alamo. That's without CDW. It's a lot cheaper than any other company.

We used Dan Dooley last March,(we got a deal through an American Airlines vacation package) we thought they were great. Even though we were late, the man driving the shuttle remembered us and waited. I don't know how the prices compare, we did have to purchase the suplimental insurance but I dont' remember them being too expensive. We were happy with the car and the service.

We, too, used Dan Dooley during our trip to Ireland last Thanksgiving. They were great! Our car was clean and new, we had no hassles whatsoever. We even ruined a tire and they reimbursed us for the entire amount.

I have used AutoEurope several times in Europe with good results, too. DD just happened to be at least $100 cheaper on our Ireland rental.

You'll love Ireland (but do make sure you are covered w/insurance).

Sandy

Debbie,
I would advise against using anything from goireland - they represent themselves as Ireland's National Tourism Service but in fact they are just another commerical company whose employees are using this forum to recommend their services. I used them and never again,

Have a great time in Ireland

Hi Debbie:

I will be leaving on Sept 27th and returning on Oct. 6th. Drop me an email and I we will talk Ireland!!
JOHN

My wife and I have used both. AutoEurope in England 1998 and Dan Dooley in Ireland 1999. Happy with both. Don't think you can go wrong with either. Might agree with poster who says he went with Dooley in Ireland since it is local. We picked the car up in Dublin, very easy pick up.
One tip, if your spending time in Dublin, use local bus transp. Pic the car up on the morning of the day youn leave Dublin - You do not need a car in Dublin, in fact it would be a hinderance.

Cheers!! Terry

Just got back from Ireland. We used AutoEurope, booked through their US office. Excellent job - good car and service nad the rates were as good as I could fine. Used a Platinum Mastercard for insurance. Got it through MBNB for just that purpose and they accepted it withoug question.
Dick

Hi - me again.

Here is an update. I got a quote from both Autoeurope & Dan Dooley for my trip .
Both are for an automatic - Toyota corolla - full ins. / unlimited mileage, etc. Same # of days, same airport pick up /drop off.

AE = $284 DD = $371

Any ideas on why there is such a price difference? Should I be worried that AE came in so low?

thanks for any insight you can give me.
Debbie

We used AutoEurope for our trip to Ireland last month and were quite pleased. (I've also heard good things about Dan Dooley!) AutoEurope contracts with different companies in different locations - so my guess is that peoples experiences with them might be more variable. Anyway, we had no problems!

Jane Oct 3rd, 2000 01:34 PM

DEFINITELY avoid goireland--had problems myself and have only heard negatives from others.

Debbie Oct 6th, 2000 09:54 AM

Hi Gang.
Just wanted to let you know - Dan Dooley gave me the wrong rate the first time I submitted the request. It was supposed to be 334 for 8 days. I did decide to go with them - after all the other pieces were added on (+1 driver/ deduct ins/ subtract out CDW) they were within $5 of Autoeurope, and I feel better with a local company.

thanks for all your comments!

P.S. according to the phone person I talked to , the reason they are SOOOO SLOW in responding to emails is that they only have 1 manager handling all the emails - no wonder it takes forever. they really need to jump into the WEB age!

Stay away from Auto Europe. Their agents are uninformed and frequently give wrong information. Rented car from Dublin airport and dropped it off in Galway. Agent told me there would be no dropoff charge. There was on my final charge card bill. The company refused to remove it. The agent at Dublin airport was very intent on adding everything she could to my agreement. I had to read very carelfully to avoid extra charges. Take the bus or train. It's more relaxing.

can anyone supply the us 800 number for dan dooley.
thanks in advance

Patrick Oct 20th, 2000 06:48 PM

To Jim: After dealing with AutoEurope a number of times, I can't believe that if you have a written contract with them and you call their 800 # when you get home they won't reimburse you for the extra charges. I know that sometimes the firm they use or the individual agents at the various rental companies won't know or agree with your contract, but it's hard to believe that Auto Europe won't live up to their own contract. Did you try that when you got home?

Debbie Oct 23rd, 2000 09:51 AM

Dana,
here is the US # 1-800-331-9301
they only answer from around 9 - 5 eastern time I believe.
the web site is www.dan-dooley.ie

I got an automatic Corolla, for 8 days
+ 1 extra driver, + ins to cover deductible, ( incl. theft & fire ins) for $340

good luck.
Debbie
