AutoEurope in Munich?

I've read many of the AutoEurope posts and it seems the overall consensus is that they are good. After lots of good advice from this forum, we have decided to rent a car for our 1-week trip to Germany (through the Alps). Now we are trying to decide on a rental company and the best rate seems to be with AutoEurope. Is this really a good choice? My other question - We would like to get our car at the airport in Munich when we arrive - does AutoEurope have a base there, and does anyone know which rental car company they hook you up with there? Any advice appreciated!

No, last time up AutoEurope served as a car rental broker for Avis in Germany. When asking for a quote you should specify all requirements (car size, a/c or not, pick up at the airport in Munich, drop of city, ..., etc). Unless procedures have changed, they should send you a sample of what your voucher should look like. This informs which car rental company you should be looking for once in Munich (Avis if nothing has changed). Once you pay for the rental you'll get the true voucher in the exact same terms. Be sure to examine your "pre-voucher" to assess if there's something missing regarding your specification before you pay.
Paulo
Last year we rented a car through Autoeurope and picked it up at the Munich rail station (Hauptbahnhof). Our only problem was with the rental company, even though AE's voucher stated we would be driving in the Czech Republic, the clerk at Europcar neglected to put it on the contract and so we were delayed at the border. We've used AE many times and find them to usually have the best deal. We've also used Kemwel, a similar operation.

Although we picked up our car in Frankfurt, we dropped it off at the Munich airport. We'd used AutoEurope because it gave us the best deal by far. If you aren't aware, AutoEurope doesn't have cars itself, but it uses cars from other agencies. I suppose they use different agencies to fulfill the requests, because in our case, we used a car from I think it was called Europcar. We had no problems at all with them.I would guess they would pick Europcar or another agency at the airport, if you told them that you wish to pick the car up there.

Call 800-233-5555 and get your qoute.
They are the best ! They use all of the
rental companies at various locations but probably Europcar in Munich--they
are the National of Europe.

Hi Carolyn, I'm glad you posted your message. I'm going to Germany in June and have made most of my plans. I just checked their web page and thought you'd like it too. Lots of choices in cars to choose from.

http://www.autoeurope.com/
My experiences with autoeurope have been fine, but they have also been fine with a (smaller? - - at least a smaller advertising budget, that's for sure) competitor - - www.its-cars-hotels.com - - they have similar rates to ae for germany shown on their website right now. Be aware that these rates (although they will lock you in) do fluctuate with market conditions - - in fct, I understand that several of the consolidators re-negotiate their contracts very frequently with the "majors" and that's why it's not possile to predict whose car they will supply to you.

www.its-cars-hotels.com DOES allow 3 or 4 days rentals (maybe autoeurope does too; I can't remember, and it isn't apparent on their rates listings right now). Of course, at 5 days, the rate is essentially the same as for 7 days. Even so, the three day option can be very handy sometimes.

Best wishes,

Rex

Last time I was in Europe, summer 98 we used AE and the rental was through Avis.
We are going again in a few weeks, again the rental is with Avis. We are picking up at the Duesseldorf airport. I don't know if it is based on location on what actual company they use. In 93, it was Euoropcar that the rental was through. AE is just a middleman, don't have a counter anywhere if that is what you mean. When they fax you the contract, it will say who the rental is with.

Because AE is a middleman, the things gets complicated if you have to make changes to the rental after you get there - e.g. more days. You have to always go thru AE to get the negotiated price. The rental company (no AE)converted the difference in charge to the dollar using their ridiculous exchange rate. I had to complain in length to AE to have charge entered in local currency.
