Auto theft in Turkey

Is there much auto theft in Turkey? Going on a gulet cruise and thinking of locking valuables including $$ in the car - bad idea? Would rather not but what does one do with $$, credit cards, atm cards etc when on a gulet and in the water snorkling? Plan on a 3-4 day csruise so won't be able to used the hotel safe.

Just post the name of the carpark here and I'll keep an eye on your car ;-)

If it were me, I wouldn't take too much extra cash with me and lock what I did have and any other valuables in my luggage (on the gulet). I would never leave anything valuable locked in a car in Turkey or elsewhere for that matter.

Thanks for the common sense information. I guess the problem I'm having is that it seems, based on numerous posts, that ATMs can be a problem, Credit cards are not accepted with anywhere near the frequency as other countries, and finally so many posts recommend bringing cash. Yes I can bring Travellers Checks but they are such a pain and am not sure they would be accepted everywhere in Turkey. I am probably analyzing this to death and will just take the same precautions as in other countries.

Terry,

When I was in Turkey, I only had a problem once in 2 weeks with the ATMs. You are right about the travelers checks, but you can bring some as backup and change them back when you get home if you don't use them. Enjoy Turkey, it's a fascinating country.

I just came back from Turkey and I cruised along the coast all the way. We shopped everywhere we went with my wife and every business accepted credit cards...

I would say just take credit cards with you.
hi,
locking your valuable in the car is really not a good idea and I liked the comment of asking the Q. where is your parking lot.:))
Instead take all your money on board and give it to the captain to take care of it.
thats what I do , so if it gets stolen he is responsible.
www.turkishpeople.com
Hi, Terry,
Another possibility-- why don't you do 2 car rentals? The cost of the car rental that you're parking (and not using) for the 3-4 days should offset the increased price for 2 shorter rentals. That's what we did when we broke up our trip and stopped for a short cruise.
I would never, never, never leave anything valuable in a parked car-- and probably would not leave anything at all in a car. I wouldn't want to risk the possibility that someone would break in.
