Auto rental insurance coverage

I just finished a short stay in Scotland and had a slight fender-bender with my rental car. My Visa Platinum card recommend waving the rental insurance so I did so. Am waiting for the damage assessment to follow through with the claim (which I've already filed.) The accident happened backing in to a stone wall at the hotel. My one concern was that I was bumped up to a Mercedes .. not an exotic car, and Visa says 'some models of Mercedes are covered." Am wondering if anyone has had experiences filing a claim and what they can tell me.

I think that refers to the make of the vehicle YOU rent, not restricting which vehicles it would cover that were involved in an accident with the rental car.

Elizabeth is right. That provision has nothing to do w/ the car you hit - it relates to the model you rented . . .

I think I failed to express myself. It was a Mercedes that I rented. When I said I was "bumped up to a Mercedes" I meant that I was given an upgrade from the original rental ..

Hey TC,

Have you spoken to Visa?

TCornutt - or I failed to read properly! What model? My Amex coverage is based on a dollar value of the car in the market in which it is rented ($65,000 last time I checked - I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how much a Kia Sportage sold for in Namibia!)

Elizabeth - It's a C-class .. a C200 to be exact. I have to imagine that this is included in the category of "some Mercedes" that Visa insures, as it's a more affordable model and retails for well under $65K.

Ira - I did contact Visa to initiate the claim. At the time the woman attempted to check if the model was covered but couldn't ascertain. I'm still waiting to get the charges from the rental place before moving forward with the claim.
