Auto Rental

What are the gasoline prices in Germany now? I recently read an article suggesting that it would be more economical to rent a diesel-powered auto and that diesel fuel is as easily obtainable as gasoline in Germany. Is that true?

We previously used AutoEurope for car rental, but cannot find on their website where a choice is available.

Thanks for any suggestions.

We rented last March from AutoEurope in Switzerland and Germany. Rent a diesel Volkswagon Passat. You get great gas mileage and plenty of speed for the Autobahn. Diesel is sold at all gas stations. Call the car company and make the request.

Lynn,
We just got back from Germany last week (trip report forthcoming! :)) and rented from Auto Europe. Never thought to specify a diesel car, but thank goodness they gave us one! We drove around a LOT in 16 days and having a diesel Audi 4 station wagon (SUCH a nice car!) probably saved at least $200 in gas. Diesel is running abt 1.95 Euro/liter right now (The lowest we found was 1.80 and highest was abt 2.10 - ouch!). Unleaded was pbly abt 10 cents more - truthfully I didn't pay that close attention so don't quote me on that?

I would just call Auto Europe's 800# to see if they will specify diesel for you. I had a few questions regarding my rental and they were extremely helpful both times I called them.

By the way just thought I'd mention this - in case you are intending on taking any side trips to Switzerland, the odd thing is diesel is more expensive than regular in that country!

The major rental companies to not give a choice to rent a diesel-car. Mosts rental cars require gas. Consider that different gas types ("normal", "super" and "super plus").

The gas price for super was in an average 1,14 €/liter (www.benzinpreis.de/statistik.phtml?o=2) and for diesel 1,03 €/liter (www.benzinpreis.de/statistik.phtml?o=3).

The forecast for the next days:
Normal 1.159 €
Super 1.160 €
SuperPlus 1.180 €
Diesel 1.016 €

tom22 is right on with the prices. Also keep in mind that fuel prices vary from one country to the next, often greatly. So, in general, fuel is more expensive in France than in Germany, where it's more expensive than Austria or Switzerland.

Huh? are you kidding? I hope that the two other posts below yours are as accurate as I believe them to be!

Best wishes,

Rex

<<Diesel is running abt .95 Euro/liter right now (The lowest we found was .80 and highest was abt 1.10 - ouch!).>>
