Austrian Train Tarvel

Hello.

I have been researching purchasing train tickets on the Austrian Railways website and have not found a way in which to purchase them on-line for customers from the US. It seems you must call Austria directly to purchase them over the phone. Does anyone have any experience with this? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, anyone have an idea of how much the fare is from Vienna to Salzburg? Would it be any less buying a round-trip ticket instead of two one-ways?

Thanks in advance.

Have a good day.

Ross

The heading should have read Austrian Train Travel, not Tarvel!!!

Vienna - Salzburg costs 42,80 euro one way in 2nd class. Round trip is 2 times above price.

No need to purchase tickets until you are in Vienna.

Trains run almost every hour. Just go to the Vienna Westbahnhof giving yourself extra time to buy your ticket ( cash or credit card) and board train.

Thanks VERY much for your quick reply, Molker.

Danke.

I doubt very much if you would have difficulty in taking the train from Vienna West to Salzburg.

As Molker has already said, trains between the two cities are frequent. A minor concern is time of travel.

Some trains make more stops than others as you probably already know.

Of the times I saw, 2 hours, 36 minutes is the shortest; 3 hours 18 minutes is the longest. The difference is in the number of stops, 7 versus 2.

You can book online, but it is not really worth doing so as pointed out previously.

Still, if you feel you must - go to www.oebb.at, search for the desired train in the first place, and click through a maze of screens, the English will at some point revert back to German so if that doesn't work for you, give up.

There is also an "Tickets by email" option, again only in German.
