Austrian or German Town for Home Base

I am looking for a town to use as a home base for a 2 week vacation in Feb. Will be doing day trips to sightsee and ski and possibly an overnight or 2. Any ideas? What about Salzburg?

Will you have a car or wll you rely on trains?

Not sure; VERY flexible.

I suggest Innsbruck. Salzburg is OK as well, although some of the day-trip places would be awkward to get to by trains (Berchtesgsaden, although there is bus; Saalbach valley, Zell am See, Hallstatt, Reit im Winkel, bus from Prien)

From Innsbruck trains go to the Arlberg, the Seefeld area, Garmisch. Other places can be reached by bus - Stubaital, etc.

I highly recommend the Schurrs and their chalet - www.haus-schurr.de.vu - in the Leutaschtal between Garmisch and Seefeld (above Mittenwald). This area is well-known for cross-country skiing; not only that, it's beautiful.
