Austrian Lake District dilemma
I will be in Salzburg for Christmas and would like to spend a few days (approx 4-6) exploring the Southern Lake District. I will be travelling on my own and will be using public transport.
Any suggestions for areas to visit, places to stay and (more importantly) how to get there! I would especially like to see Mondsee again as well as Hallstatt. I realise this time of year is a little restrictive regarding transport - hence the dilemma - but am not opposed to being driven to Mondsee and making day trips from there. |
regular postal bus servicd Salzburg to Lake Wolfgang area - hourly or so and bus to Bad Ischl to catch trains to Hallstatt, which also has mainline rail service back to Salzburg.

Hi gigimo,
Yes, I agree with Palenque. I spent five days at St. Gilgen and didn't have a car. It was easy and fun! There is good bus service throughout the towns on all the lakes. If there is no snow on the ground, you can even cycle to some destinations -- great way to see the area. You can get all the bus information at www.oebb.at Have fun! s |
Thanks Palenque and swandav2000 - very useful information which will help me plan my trip,

I love St. Gilgen as a base location. Look at Garni Schernthaner for good value.

Thanks Bob ... I'll look into it!
