Austrian Food... :(
 

Just returned from a 12-day journey in Austria (including Vienna, Salzburg and Salzkamergut). The mountains were great, the lakes (with ducks and swans) were lovely, but the food… bllaaaa… No matter what we ordered, we ended up with a schnitzel!!!

Honestly, Alonso, I have to conclude that you must not have looked very hard for good food. Even the lower cost restaurants all over Austria have a pretty good selection; certainly there is plenty of variety other than schnitzel. Did you really understand the menu choices? Did you ask the waiter/waitress any questions?<BR><BR>I have had wonderful fish, pork, and beef in Austria. And their vegetables in the spring, summer, and fall are excellent. Lake trout from the cold Austrian lakes is my most favorite. I do believe that you could have had a much broader choice of food if you had tried a little harder. <BR><BR>Now, if you were on an organized tour, and they took you to specific restaurants, it is possible that your menu selections might have been limited. Just one more reason why I never take tours.

Alonso, I'm glad you enjoyed my favorite country -- Austria. However, I disagree with you about the food. I think Austrian food is great. You just need to know what to order. They have some fabulous sausages, their soups are awesome and their desserts are to die for (especially palatschinken and mohr im hempt). Austrian pork is some of the best in the world. Should have tried some pork loin - Yum! Maybe you just didn't do enough research so you'd know what to order.

So you never had:<BR><BR>Leberkn&ouml;del Suppe <BR>Gulasch <BR>Wiener Backhendl<BR>forelle<BR>Tafelspitz<BR>Palatschinke n<BR>Knoblauchsuppe<BR>kernolsalat<BR><BR>I could go on and on.<BR>All NOT schnitzel!<BR>

Well, it was not an organized tour, thanks God, and yes, I tried pork, veal, lake-fish, chicken, in many locations, and too many times it was made on a schnitzel basis.

To Alonso,<BR>I have lived here since August and although I have eaten some good meals - more consistently in the countryside- I have found Vienna has a large number of very poor restaurants or just simply exceptionally mediocre, with the 2 worst meals I have had in my memory being in Vienna (Esterhazy Keller and Die Wienerin, with another shocker being Che). I think the best value restaurants in Vienna (and the most consistent are Japanese), with excellent pizza coming from Regina Marguerita in Wallnerstrasse -great environment as well in an outside courtyard of Palais Esterhazy.

During my 7-day visit to Austria, I never had schnitzel. I never ordered it from the menu, and was never severed it. Actually, schnitzel was one of the items on my "foods to try" list, but I never got around to getting it, because there was always something else on the menu that looked better.

Gimme schnitzel instead of burgers any day.
