Austrian Castles and Herrenwarfen?

Looking for suggestions of Castles in the Tyrol/Alps region to visit.
Also,a poster from a few years back mentioned: "...impressed by a hilltop castle in the Austrian Alps called Herrenwarfen. It was on the main highway to the resort town we were staying in, and at first sight it was so dramatic and majestic. I couldn't find it in my guidebook. I still don't know why it's not listed, but it was an old castle fortress with a renaissance fair thing going on, jousts and craft fairs. "Does this description match someplace with perhaps a different name?

We always go by Hohenwerfen on our way to/from Salzburg area. You can see it from the highway. It's really beautiful from the outside but we've never had the time to stop.

I really enjoyed Hohenwerfen when we visited in 2008. If you enjoy a light hike, you can hike up the back rather than take the venicular. The trails are a bit narrow and steep, but still seemed safe enough. We saw a falconry demonstration while we were there as well. Some of our very best photos were of the castle and the valley below from the bell tower.

We've never stopped at Hohenwerfen Fortress, but have passed it twice. Looks great.

We liked Schloss Ambras in Innsbruck and Tratzburg, also near Innsbruck.

Another we planned on seeing last year, but didn't have the time, is Kufstein.

Hi F,

My Lady Wife and I both enjoyed the falconry exhibit.

The castle is a short ride from Salzburg.

Castle Hohenwerfen is a terrific place to visit. The drive is about 45 minutes outside of Salzburg and about 1 hr from Berchesgaden. During the summer months, falconry demonstrations are held at least twice daily and the location is a perfect spot for such a show. Once you reach the Castle parking lot, it takes a bit to get up to the top in the funicular or to walk up if you choose. I would allow a good hour prior to show times to reach the top.Once you reach the top, you need to walk around to the area where the shows are.
There are also terrific views of the valleys from anywhere up top!

Hohenwerfen is the setting for the Richard Burton/Clint Eastwood war flick "Where Eagles Dare". One of my favorite movies ever. Gorgeous winter scenery and much carnage.

That's right, Otzi. I remember reading that somewhere. I too loved that movie! And you're right about the scenery (and carnage).
